Review: Basic understanding of the language, a good start - Got this for my partner who was travelling to India for first time, he could pick up couple words and form a sentence. It’s very basic tho Review: Exceptional beginner book - I’ve purchased a number of books for learning to speak Hindi. This isn’t perfect, as no book ever can be, but this is by far the best book I’ve bought on the subject. It’s very sensible and methodical in its approach and progression throughout. It should give you some pretty solid basics to build on and try to actually converse. I would absolutely recommend this.

Very clear and easy to follow
I've been learning Hindi for some time and really wish I had found this book earlier. It is very clearly written, sentences are laid out so that patterns can be identified. The chapters follow a well thought out and structured sequence which really support the learning experience. New words and more complexity are gradually introduced so that you feel a sense of achievement without being overwhelmed. It has both the Romanagri and Devanagri script which is a terrific bonus. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn Hindi.

Begin at the beginning and really learn
This is the book for absolute beginners. Ever tried Snell's books and got bogged down in the script far to quickly? Then this is the book for you. It starts you learning the words, in really useful phrases. It follows a straightforward approach for the beginner trying to learning Hindi. And when you have completed the book do check out the author's Youtube videos and classes. You be amazed! I know I was glad I did.

All you need to know as a beginner!
I have been taking Hindi lessons as a beginner. This book is so easy to understand and everything in it for a beginner to learn. I got on much better with this book than the book the tutor recommended!

Horribly Inefficient and Boring Treatment of the Language
I am not entirely finished with the book, but the author doesn't know how language pedagogy works, and it shows. Ironically, the part that is supposed to give inspiration to the reader, which are passages written by users of the course, are perhaps the best part of the book for the reasons that I'll explain below. Languages are learnt through the presentation of a huge number of examples, most easily through reading and listening. There are a number of repeated examples in the book, but these are intensely boring ("Main english hoon", really? You couldn't have made something interesting with the post positions taught in the same chapter to maybe explain the geography of India or something?) and also aren't really sufficient to reinforce them. The translation method, which I believe is supposed to encourage some sort of mastery of the grammatical rules, misses out how we actually use language. That is, without thinking. Whether or not you believe in Krashen's implicit knowledge hypothesis, or if it's pure habituation, the fact of the matter is you need many examples of INPUT to reach this. 6 sentences are not sufficient, and are frustrating to do when insufficient input is given to have a proper grasp of the grammar. On top of this, the constant vocabulary lists without context. Firstly, to know a word requires many repeated viewings, perhaps as many as 20 in some cases, which are not provided. Secondly, some will argue that this must be in context, which is not there. Thirdly, what motivation would I have to learn these lists of words when I know this? Seriously, you could probably better teach Hindi if you took a random literate indian person, and made them write stories in increasing levels of complexity (Starting with how you'd tell a story to a 2 year old, 3 year old etc.) and then explained grammar when relevant (or perhaps not even then, if you have other context to make this comprehensible).

TLDR: The book claims to be aimed at complete beginners, with a focus on the written language. Instead it is focused on dry grammar and it lacks structure and videos for pronounciation. Page 62 you first learn how to use all the personal pronouns. Before this, you learn random nouns and their gender. That is not useful at all, because you can't form any sentences with those alone. You do learn how to introduce yourself in the beginning... if you are a male, conservative, middle class, married engineer that is. You learn words like brother and sister, mother and father on completely different pages. Each chapter also ends with texts written by students that you can't decipher with the information in the chapter itself. There is no systematic approach to word groups like countries, numbers, food, traffic, doctor appointments at all. All info is scattered throughout the book. I've read many language books, this is the worst by a long shot.

I have wanted Hindi to learn for years but never had the opportunity or time to do it. I tried on my own and have many books. I did one to one tutoring online but it was fast paced and left me in the dust. Not until I stumbled on “Pingu Learns Hindi” and learned about Hindi University that I ‘ve had success. The book and online free university created by Ashu Agarwal has created a stress free supported environment for learning one of the most complex languages in the world. The book is easy to follow with lots of exercises . The classes are likewise . With students from around the world participating , there is lots of practice time for conversation. Grammar is presented in a novel way. It was much less daunting than other formats . If you want to learn Hindi , give this a try .
