Waterproof storage for tinder and emergencies.
I buy these locally. I use them to store flammable tinder- cotton balls smeared with vaseline. Then I attach a Firesteel lanyard type firestarter to the ring. I keep several of these handy for this since its always wet in southeast Alaska and you can never find dry tinder when you need it. That combined with a paraffin-dryer lint-egg carton starter can light a fire on a wet beach. So- RELEVANT to boaters...Then, that goes with emergency supplies (including matine floating waterproof battery radio) in a five gallon bucket with a gamma lid. If we get stuck and have to abandon, grab the ditch bucket and go. Plus the bucket can give the little kids something bright to float with adding to their vests and letting them conserve energy. If you make it to shore, what's the first thing you need??? FIRE. What tough to get when everything you have is soaked? FIRE.FYI ball chain type key holders are USELESS. Those things never stay attached and your keys still sink. I always replace that with a split type key ring of some sort. Use a non-corrosive metal for salt waters. THEN, on that I attach an aluminim style carabiner which can hook a number of places, life jacket strap, belt loop, even bathing suit straps or waistband ties. Then you don't lose hold of it.This float has a rubber o-ring. Its that nearly flourescent reddish orange color. Brighter than the image, a bit. The two halves screw together and the O-ring seals it. The plastic is sturdy. The one in my jam-packed glive box is solid after being dropped and smooshed, dropped with firewood, etc. The float and large firesteel fit in any pocket you could fit in iphone. (which, if you don't have a dry bag for, is toast in the water anyhow.) i get a dry bag with a long strap and loop the strap thru my loop on my jeans. Then thats dry and I have gps and charts to give my location also.Anyhow I love these floats. I can start about 10 LARGE fires with the cotton crammed in there. I use them on land more than in the boat. But you only need it once to make it the best $4.16 you ever spent.Plus the three or four boat keys you need will float with that stuff on there. Test it in the sink first with your specific keys.
