Would you concider these good garage scissors?

They are. But be aware they are very sharp and will easily cut anything including human skin. In addition, although one can cut materials that quite thick, it advised to wear a pair of gloves to protect the hands when pressure is applied to the scissor handles.

Will these shears cut indoor/outdoor carpeting that has a backing such as the green lawn look-alike carpeting you see everywhere?

I purchased to trim vinyl blinds which cut effortlessly. Haven't tried cutting carpet, but scissors are large and I would guess carpet would be no problem

Are the grips on these comfortable to use? Is there plenty of room in the handles?

The grips aren't padded or anything, just metal. But they have a nice comfortable shape to them. My hands are pretty average sized, never had an issue with them fitting in. A coworker of mine has real thick hands and he hasn't had an issue either.
