I felt like the fit narrow. I was at a store and tried on some Columbia low top shoes which fit just fine. Then these 3/4 top shoes (same size) for some reason were narrow and a bit too tight.

Q: Do they cover the ankle?

They come up to the ankle. Comfortable but the side blew out in mine. Looks like a common problem based on reviews.

Q: Can these be washed in a washing machine?

Because mine shredded on the outside left shoe after a month of not-all-that-strenuous wear, I'd advise against trying it. You might be able to get an approved answer from Columbia customer support. I have normal oxfords from Columbia that I don't wash . You can (and maybe should ) pull out the insoles every so often and just replace them as damp insoles become kinda skunky .

Q: Are they good for roofing work?

I'm not a roofer, but they do get good traction!
