How much polishing compound is in the block provided? The pictures provided show a larger block being used to cover the leather.

Not sure how many ounces - but it does cover the surface very well and there is a lot left over for future applications. I think it used up about 25% - but the initial application will take the most to cover the surface then the touch ups as needed won't use up much. The leather strop is first rate and i have been able to polish my hand plane blades to a nice sharp shine.

What animal is this strop made of? Cow hide?

Can other compounds such as CBN or spray diamond be used?

This is a piece of leather! Can you put spray compound on leather! If so yes and I have rubbed several different components on mine it works fine!

Anyone used for tools; chisels and plane irons? Any good or just for knives?

I only use this for chisels and plane irons. I used contact cement and glued it to a piece of 3/4 MDF. Instead of the included compound I use trend mirror paste on the smooth side provides a much better edge. I use the lapping films and float glass method for sharpening so a final strop is all I need. If I used stones I would buy 2 and have one for rough side and one for smooth.
