Townshend's Suicide Note
By Numbers was described by some reviews when it was first released as Townshend's suiciee note. Punk appeared to be taking over and it seems that aging rocker, Townshend, was feeling irrelevant. Daltry was, as usual, at odds with the other three in the band, mostly because of their substance abuse. Moon was traveling merrily down the road of self destruction. Entwhistle, he appears to have been just hanging out. After Who's Next with all that synthesizer, and Quadraphenia with all that production, it seemed that this might be the last Who. By Numbers is stripped down with nary a synthesizer in sight. But the tensions were there. Daltrey refused to do the vocals on However Much I Booze proclaiming that he did not have a problem with alchohol. In fact, he almost refused to be part of the album at all. Nevertheless, By Niumber, which was pretty much panned in 1975, has turned out to be a classic. Townshend explored themes like rebellian against the establishment, relationships, the tensions in the band, and, of course, Entwhistle contributes a satirical number about the life and fame of a rock and roll musician. A really nice touch is Nicky Hopkins playing the piano. Before Moon died, Daltrey insisted that only the four of them would be on stage, which gave concert goers the infamous taped synthesizers and sometimes other instruments. Who Came First was the next album, with Moon in full decline. By Numbers was the last where Moon was able to show just why he was one of the greatest drummers.None of these numbers were a staple in the band's play list when touring. Except for Slip Kid and Squeeze Box, which got some air play, they have all been pretty much lost in the dust bin of rock and roll history. And now they are The Two. Elaborate shows when they tour. Zack Starkey on drums, the only drummer who was a worthy successor to Moon. Keyboard players, even a so-called musical director during the Quadraphenia tour a few years back.I still love listening to By Numbers, the last in the series when The Who, for all their internal problems, could still claim to be one of the greatest bands ever.

ジャケットの絵を完成させた人はいるのだろうか?
なんとなく地味な印象のアルバムですが実は名曲揃いのアルバムです。特にDreaming From The Waistなんか一度生で聴いてみたいな。

Favourite Who LP
My fave Who album. 1975 music seems to get a bad press but this LP is one of that years finest.
