The Incal

I got this after seeing the documentary on the Dune Jodorowski would have made and I was very interested in the story he wanted to bring to the screen and after seeing this, I know my interest was not misplaced. The book suffers from a small amount of Deus Ex Machina and happy coincidence, a little forced drama and urgency, but overwhelmingly it is unique, beautifully drawn, well-executed and a great read. Those are minor gripes in the realm of graphic novels, really. The first 50 pages didn't draw me in well but once Jodorowski hit his stride as a storyteller in this medium the book takes off and becomes phenomenal. It's got a blend of almost everything as far as genres go, has interesting viewpoints and a great overall story arc. It has compelled me to get the next book in the series, eventually. If money wasn't tight I would have gotten the second one already. I spent an hour sniffing the pages and looking at the artwork when I first got this, the publishing is VERY quality for the price. Built in bookmark just adds extra value and makes keeping track of your place so simple. If you're a fan of Jodorowski, Moebius or good graphic novels, sci-fi adventures or intellectual, philosophical discourse hidden in a good story, you should get this. You can miss out if you want, but it's totally worth the price to hold this and read it.

I have many copies of the old heavy-metal magazine, but I don’t have the complete story of the Incal. here it is, in all its glory. I love the art, and I finally get to see how the story completely unfolds. The print is gorgeous, and it is a wonderful way to spend an evening or two discovering a new story (if you are new to this) or rediscovering, and — as I have — finally, seeing the full story. At some future point, I will get some of the other books by Jodorowsky, and I’ll let you know what I think about them when I get to it 😉

The Incal is a magnificent graphic novel. Knowing little of its reputation, I ordered it by recommendation alone. It was amazing. Vivid, imaginative setting, great art, memorable characters. Compelling narrative. However, the end is a bit of a let down, a little to vague a denouement for my liking. However, overall, I recommend this to anyone who loves graphic novels or comics or science fiction in general. If buying from Super Book Deals, be warned; they were not entirely truthful about shipping time (said it shipped, then lo and behold, another message two weeks later that says that it just shipped). Even after it shipped, it took a full month to arrive (even though seller was in same state, should've just walked there and back), and despite condition listed as "new", corners were bent. In short, get this graphic novel, you will love it. But don't buy it from Super Book Deals.

I didn't realize that there are several other books on the INCAL topic, but after getting a first look at what must be the 1st of the series (including those "preludes" written later) it's gorgeous! The art is imaginative and not what I expected, and the story has already grabbed me after only a couple of pages. I don't really care that there are 6 or 7 variants of INCAL: this one is rich with enough to keep me satisfied, for the samples of this work can be applied to any of the others. Moebius has been an artist for generations and that's a priceless legacy. This book weighs in at 320 pages of inspiration!

I really enjoyed this book. It is an incredible example of ninth art, an adult comic (or graphic novel) that blends fantasy, violence, and politics. Jodorowsky's story is crazy. It meanders through a lot of strange scenarios. I don't have as much time to read as I would like, and had to read this in small installments. Every time I picked it up I was lost as to the storyline. I found myself backtracking several pages to recall what was going on. I will definitely need to reread to get the full scope. I thought the story got stronger toward the end, which reminded me of a Twilight Zone ending. The artwork is great. Moebius (Jean Giraud) is considered one of France's greatest illustrators, and now I know why. I haven't seen much of his work before this, as most of the english versions of his books are out of print. The art is detailed in it's execution. The inking doesn't have the hatching or shading techniques I am used to in American comics. People talk about how great Ditko's Doctor Strange art is, well Moebius' art at the end of the Incal is insane!

My personal feeling is the Incal series is the best graphic novels ever. Even better than The Watchmen.

I first heard about this book when it was referenced as something that “The Fifth Element” had “ripped off”, so it piqued my interest. The foreword in it even addresses how many stories have borrowed from it or been inspired by it. Which I thought was weird because of how much it seems to borrow from earlier stories like Dune, Alien, and numerous others. But that’s more a critique of the foreword than the story itself. The story is great. I loved the span of it, the art style is very 1980’s but like the best of that decade. The details of the ships and backgrounds is something I really like. That characters are well written and they all feel very real for the roles they play even as the story progresses and becomes vaster in scale. Overall it’s one of the best comics I’ve read in the last decade, and I’m a little sad I didn’t get it sooner.

I came across a doco on The Incal on a Youtube rabbit hole trip. The author, Jodorowsky made a remark regarding Frank Herbert and his adaptation of Dune that made me laugh out loud, not going to say it. I watched the whole doco and ordered the book.
