If you want to format your external hard drive to work with Mac and Windows computers, you should use exFAT. With exFAT, you can store files of any size, and use it with any computer made in the last 20 years.

Yes, it will work, but you need to format it as FAT32, and how it works depends on which generation of FireStick you have. There are three main FIREOS versions out there; 5,6 and 7, each of which has a slightly different SD capability. You'll also need to buy an OTG adapter with a micro USB in, out and at least one USB port to plug the SD drive into. Is this shorter than a normal memory stick? The one I have in my car keeps getting knocked because it is too long.

Yes these are much shorter than standard drives, only 11 mm will protrude out of the USB socket and being Samsung they work very well and fast transfers. There are even shorter sticks out there but I have found they get very hot as they can't dissipate heat as efficiently.
