Exaco Trading Company Thermo King Giant Composter, Green

Lacks Sturdy Structure (Modified for Strength)
This item is not cheap. After reviewing the various options available on the market I purchased this for garden composting. I had viewed videos on the Exaco website which showed employees demonstrating the sturdiness of the bins by standing on top of them. The material is thick enough and expect it will last a good long time but the fact that there is no bottom piece to fasten the sides together creates a flimsy structure. The top offers no support so ultimately you end up with the same scenario as if you took a cardboard box without a top or bottom and set it on the ground. I remedied this situation by fastening pressure treated 2x4 materials to the concrete slab (along the inside edge of the bin) where I planned to site the compost bin. Then I fastened the bottom edge of the bin with self tapping lag bolts to the 2x4 material. This made a very strong structure that I am very satisfied with. Fastening it firmly to the ground also made the top latch and lid much more functional as they don't have to contend with "wiggly" walls. However, I wasn't expecting to have to reinforce the bin like this, so it was kind of an extra PITA. I still Would never stand on it :)

Best composter I've ever owned
I have two of these composters on my 6-acre mini-farm, and it's the best composter I've ever had. The open composters (open pit) can be very useful if you have time to manage them, but I have a full-time job and have to take care of my property in my spare time. I don't have time to turn compost. I find this Giant composter wonderful for hiding all of the garbage and trimmings from our acreage that I generate. I have one under an oak tree and another by our shop, and I love them both! It's been a year and they are not full yet. Once I fill them both, I plan to leave them alone to turn into compost while I use a third one. This is the sturdiest composter I've ever used too -- all of the others (and I've had several over decades of having backyards and a farm) are much more flimsy. With other composters, I've had parts break off when I'm trying to put them together, and they break when you overload them with materials. Grrr. I hated all of my previous plastic composters. This one is the real deal, a heavy-duty thick-walled composter that's easy to put together and works like it's supposed to. It's very big, with much more room than the usual composter available from a big box store.

Works, but could be better...
Ordered this because I was converting my open wire bin compost piles to something more aesthetically pleasing. The first one I ordered I sent back without even removing it from the packaging. When received, there was a big bulge on one edge, and apparently re-taped. Removing the tape, I see one of the pieces poking up at an angle from the layered packing (causing the bulge), and it is missing a large chunk of plastic, with torn and mangled edges. The replacement arrived earlier than expected, they had said early May but I had it 2 weeks earlier. No ominous lumps this time. Removing it from the packaging, I notice a few small pieces of broken plastic. Examining, I discover that most are either chips from edges that are covered by another piece, or from the interlocking mechanism they apparently build into the injection molds to use to hold the pieces together while shipping. I did not determine this to be return worthy. Putting it together required some force to lock the larger pieces together (a rubber mallet worked fine and did not damage any edges).Had it at least a week now, with grass clippings placed inside for composting. It seems to be holding together well so far. The spot I placed it isn't completely level, and that is affecting the lid latching. An active system (knob or slider) would be better. It would also be easier to use if it had an easily removable access panel (the front panel isn't, since I had to use the mallet to get the piece installed).

good and bad
Great capacity so you can compost a lot at once. The hinge on the lid broke almost immediately. I have to keep a stone on it to keep it from flying off in the wind.Generally a good purchase if you need a large enclosed composter.

Had an awesome experience with this company
Had a faulty composter and complained to customer service. The owner called me directly and was incredibly kind, knowledgeable and accommodating and sent me out a new unit. Other composters I've used from Exaco have been amazing so I can't say enough positively about this company.

This composter assembles easily with no tools
This composter assembles easily with no tools. Make sure your surface is pretty flat and level. Seems pretty durable, even though the two doors that make the lid aren't attached very well. At least they are nice and heavy. Aside from worms and bugs, it's pretty much animal proof, unless you have large bears or elephants. The greatest thing about this thing is it's really huge compared to most composters. Great for kitchen compost, grass clippings, leaves, and cardboard boxes that are too dirty to recycle, like pizza boxes. Much less temptation now to burn stuff to keep the yard tidy. Love it.

this is what I was looking for.
If you have space for a huge composter, this one is great. And it is built like a tank.

Great product
We bought this (truly) giant container to compost manure in a dry desert environment where a wooden-sided compost bin would not work. Put it together with ease and it's holding up well so far. Usually don't support the use of plastic, but for this purpose it's essential.

Tricky to assemble.
This didn’t come with any assembly instructions, not even a simple diagram, but I found a promotional video for it on YouTube where someone lines up the panels an clicks them together really easily. Unfortunately, in reality, it wasn’t that easy. The panels don’t just click together. They require considerable force. I would recommend that you use a mallet for this and also get someone to help as lining up the panels and pushing them together at the same time is very difficult.
