The Platypus SoftBottle Water Bottle with Push-Pull Cap is not just an outdoor essential, but an everyday, everyone, everywhere essential. Reusable, and refillable, it’s significantly lighter in weight than a hard water bottle of comparable volume and, when empty, collapses to take up a fraction of the space. While it’s designed for outdoor pursuits like camping, thru-hiking, and backpacking, it’s also perfect for travel, when space is at a premium, and is a safe option for the pool and beach, or anywhere that glass is impractical or hazardous. BPA-free, BPS-free, and phthalate-free, its food-grade polyethylene liner does not taste like plastic and does not retain flavors, so it can hold water one day, and wine the next. When filled, the base expands so that the bottle stands upright; Included Push-Pull Cap conveniently dispenses contents without removing the cap. The Platypus Ultralight Collapsible SoftBottle is compatible with all Platypus caps and drink tubes. Available in two sizes: 1.0-Liter size weighs just 1.2 ounces, and measures 13 x 6 inches, 0.5-Liter size weighs just 0.8 ounces, and measures 12 x 5 inches. Made in the USA.

Four out of five didn't come with caps.
I'm having a tough time writing a review on this. I love these bottles and I'm sure these ones work great! I ordered two and neither came with caps. I went to replace them and only one could be replaced. I did that and the new one came with a cap. (that was bottle number 3) I bought a second one to replace the first on that could only be returned and the new one I got didn't have a cap (bottle number 4). I contacted the seller (Amazon) to see if they would just send me a cap. They said they could not do that and offered to do another replacement. Fine. I just got the replacement today (bottle number 5), and again it has no cap. As long as you don't mind buying the caps separate, then these bottles are great and very durable.

YMMV
I've owned maybe 10 of these bottles over the past 8 years. Some last over a year, some only a couple of months. I use them maybe 5x a week for snowboarding - it's great to put water in and it fits well in my pockets.zThe failure rates are inconsistent, and inconsistent in where they fail. Some start leaking in the middle, at the side of the bottle. This is probably due to bending during storage. Others fail underneath the bottle (at the foot), on the inside. One could call this a folded part as well, but I've seen more of the newer bottles I've purchased fail at the bottoms. The older ones never failed at the bottom, so maybe it's a quality control issue.

Lightweight and Great for Backpacking!
Overall: worth buying for a light weight backpacking bottle. Probably the best overall option on Amazon. I own two of these personally.Good:Lightweight (much lighter than a Nalgene)Rolls/folds up into a small space (can fit multiple bottles in one side pocket)Good priceBPA freeSport cap (easy to drink on the move, can use it to wash dishes and hands while at camp without wasting much water)Cons:Some people have noted the slippery top cap. I don't even bother with it and tossed the cap in the recycling bin. It adds an unnecessary step between me and a drink of water. It also adds unnecessary (though negligible) weight to the pack. Besides, you'll probably lose it after a few hikes anyway. The other thing that I don't like is that the bottle hard to clean and takes a long time to dry. However, this is not particular to this bottle, but a problem for soft bottles and hydration packs in general. For every day use and short day hikes, I just use a nalgene bottle. For long distances and overnight through hikes, though, these are worth the hassle of cleaning/drying once you get home. On the trail, you can just rinse and reuse with tap water, so no worries.

Push Pull or Screw Cap for Skiing
I purchased this item with the intention of skiing. I wanted a bottle that could easily fit in my jacket for in bounds days when I didn’t want to carry a full pack. I was between this water bottle, the same bottle but with a standard screw cap and a similar .7L bottle made by Vapur. I ended up going with the standard cap. The Vapur was good quality, but .7L was slightly large for ski jacket pockets and the cap was more sizable. The push pull cap was firm which I saw as a must to ensure it did not leak in my pocket, but it did not screw onto the bottle as much as the standard screw cap, so I went with the standard cap for security reasons. That said, I have heard of people using the push pull for skiing without problems, but I still liked the increased security of the screw cap. The only downside with the screw cap is that you have to hold the cap when it’s off so there is a possibility you could drop it.

Great alternative to a much more expensive Camelbak.
I LOVE my Platypus bottles! I carried 2 1-Liter bottles last year during daytime hiking trips in Peru, and love that I (1) did not have to deal with bulky empty bottles when I was done and (2) was able to refill them and reuse them over and over without worrying about them rupturing or leaking. They're great quality and hold up for a lot of uses. I also prefer the push-pull cap on these to just a regular screw-off cap on some other bottles. Here's a tip; when empty, blow into the bottle to "inflate" it, and place it upside down to dry so that it fully dries out and you don't get any mildew in the nooks and crannies.

Leaks, Wore out after 5 weeks.
Great water bottle. But with normal use for just five weeks the crease along the center line of the bottom of the bottle has fatigued and torn. Now it leaks, this pretty much makes it useless. This seems to be a design flaw: a failure to consider fatigue in the material selection for the bottom panel of the bottle.

Not exactly "Soft" but they will do the job and are a great price!
I ordered two of these, after using (and LOVING) the Platypus PlusBottle on a recent camping trip. I assumed, based on the product name "SoftBottle" that these bottles would be made of the same material as my current PlusBottle. Unfortunately, they are not. This SoftBottle plastic is rather stiff and dare I say brittle, whereas my Platypus PlusBottle feels almost rubbery and is very flexible. The stiffness makes the flat/fused bottle edges a little uncomfortable to hold, especially in one hand. Not sharp of course, but almost so. It is fairly easy for me to imagine this bottle developing a hole or crack along a constant fold over long term use, as some reviews mention, but I feel the overall quality and convenience are totally worth it, especially at this price point. I just wanted a couple bladder-style bottles to keep on stand-by in my purse and beach bag, and I do think these SoftBottles will be excellent for this purpose. But if I wanted a similar bottle for outdoor or more rigorous use, I would highly recommend the PlusBottle instead.I will mention that my first Softbottle that has arrived (the second shipped separately) was missing the cap completely. Amazon is sending a replacement bottle free of charge, which is excellent customer service! Thanks Amazon!

Excellent for Everything, Particularly Flying
Utterly brilliant. My trick is to stay hydrated while flying, I always carry a flat, empty Platypus through customs, then fill it from the tap in the bathroom before getting on the plane. In nasty British airports like Heathrow and Gatwick just fill up even though the tap is hot and it says the water's undrinkable (it's rubbish) and by the time you're in the air and in need of a drink of water, it will have cooled down. These do tend to have a reliability problem in that they sometimes leak around the top, but if that happens, just return it for a replacement; Platypus have a great warranty....

Great for travel or hiking
I love this bottle. It’s surprisingly hard wearing and folds up to be tucked into a bag or pocket when it’s empty. Super for walking and travel. Really lightweight.I got this because I owned a platy hoser for my backpack which has been reliably leak-proof. This one seems to be reliable too. Dragged it around with me in Canada, kayaking and walking and it’s still in really good condition.

even better
Perfect size for a sports drink. They improved on the old design. I already lost the cap, maybe a retainer on a plastic ring would be a good idea... or I could be more careful.

Best water bottle ever
This is a brilliant product purchased to replace one bought over ten years ago and used daily. I've saved a fortune on buying bottles of water using the Platypus Softbottle which never leaks.
