Good Product used wisely
I bought this item having read the reviews, all of the positive reviews are spot on, I have caught five squirrels in four weeks, but not baited every day, two of which were extremely canny creatures and one them escaped but could not resist the next days food contents although it was very wary it was recaptured. The recommendations are leave a trail of 4 or 5 hazelnuts or similar from just outside the trap and a few inside to entice the blighters and get them used to entering the trap and leaving quickly, leave a 'real treat' at the back of the trap beyond the footplate that trips the door. I used pieces of stale bread with some walnut oil on it and garnished it with peanut butter all in a very small muffin case, they could not resist, I have not had to wait long for a result as canny as they are but the reason one managed to escape is because put onto the grass lawn can stop the trap door from falling 100% as the grass can hold up the door ever so slightly.I overcame this by placing the trap in a short plank of timber which kept the grass away from the door baseline. Boy was the squirrel angry when he fell for it a second time it worked hard to open the door from the inside but soon realised that it was in vain. Two pieces of advice though;May and June are good trapping months as squirrels forage and cause damage to crops extensively having eaten their larder contents over the winter and this seasons nuts and berries have not matured enough to be eaten yet.Only set the trap up if 'you' are available to safely and humanely deal with the trapped creature within an hour of capture as with the early summer heat unnecessary distress can easily be caused to them. These traps are well made and effective I would highly recommend if used correctly and humanely..

Best trap I've found
I've tried 5 different traps and this is by far the best one I've bought. (40.6 x 15.2 x 16.2 cm)It's trigger plate is a good sensitivity and it's super easy to set up.The trap is long enough that animals (in my case rats) don't get their tales caught when the door closes as the door falls straight down as opposed to swinging down. This means it can be put on uneven surfaces and the door will always close properly and not get caught on the ground so the rat can escape. It's easy to see from far away if you've caught anything as the door properly sticks up when it's set so no need to keep going outside and checking if anything is in there.Once caught it has a solid roof so the animal is slightly protected from the elements should they be in there a while and has a large handle that the animal has no access to so fingers won't be nipped when you carry it to where ever you want to release it. I used peanut butter mixed with wild bird seed as it forms a good paste that sticks well to the trigger plate.Costs a bit more than some of the other traps but I'd definitely recommend it!

Useless for grey squirrels
In a month, caught nothing. Squirrels walk straight past it, but do not enter. There is another version of this which has two doors: that way the squirrel can see the way out, so enters. This one with mesh at one end does not fool the critters. We have literally dozens of squirrels in our garden, carrying away apples, all fruit. Tried peanuts, and apples as bait - nothing went in other than mice for the peanuts - mice are too light to trigger it. The UK police are such a pain with gun licensing that one has to use traps instead (even though our garden is isolated, 1/4 mile from nearest other house or building). Poison can have side effects, killing other animals, so the search for an effective trap for them continues ...

Seems well made, but the squirrels are too smart
This trap cage is well made, easy to set, and has a very sensitive triggering mechanism. I suspect it would be hard for a squirrel to take the bait without closing the trap. Once closed ( assuming nothing is in the way of the door), it's really closed. Nothing will escape that doesn't have opposable thumbs.But... I haven't caught anything, and my yard is thick with squirrels. I bait the trap with peanut butter, and a trail of peanuts leading in. I suspect that there's just too much to eat in the area, for the squirrels to need to take any risks. Maybe in the winter when they're hungrier I might have more luck.As with any cage trap, a downside is that you have to be around to check the trap at least daily. The need for regular checking is particularly disheartening when, as in my case, the trap is always empty, and the squirrels are just sitting around telling jokes and giving me the finger.

This is the greatest find on Amazon
We got this as a last resort as squirrels were taking over the garden and tried the sonic ones which were useless and also another trap which the squirrel broke out of in 5 mins. Well they have no such joy with this cage, I have caught 6 in 10 days and now the live about 5 miles away from us and annoying some other poor person. We have only 1 left that visits and I know its wary of the trap as it must of seen one stuck in it but I know 100% it won't resist much longer. Well worth purchasing if you are at your wits end with squirrels

Roland has a laugh.
If you don't mind wasting some money on rodent traps then these are at the more acceptable end of the price scale. Having purchased 2 of these I had high hopes of snaring our Roland I followed all the instructions and suggestions from other reviews but after 3 weeks no joy. I had one sighting where the rat was around it on top of it but not in it. On one occasion the bait had been taken and the trap activated but no occupant ( No Idea ) other than a very very small or thin rodent. I will persevere.

Didn't catch a rat, door opener difficult to stay open
Bought this for a rat that decided to feast on my bird seed. Set it up, rat refused to go in it. He dug around it, underneath it trying to get to food/bate inside. He did not go inside. I did catch 2 squirrels though! So if squirrels are your problem, then go for it!The catch that holds the door up requires patience to make sure it is secure, it is purely a balancing act.Product is well built, despite the fact that I was unsuccesful in catching the rodent.Rodent disappeared 2 weeks after purchased, presumably munched by the buzzard that surveys my garden!

Cleaned out completely!! Wonderful trap.
This method of trapping is superior to rat traps, poison or shooting. This trap hasn't failed yet to catch whatever trips the plate. I used 2 of these for several weeks and TOTALLY cleaned out the chipmunks. There hasn't been even a sighting of one for the past 2 months. All in all, 22 chipmunks and 6 squirrels were captured and released over several weeks with the traps being set daily, usually placed close to the rodent's paths and burrows.Peanut butter is the key to success. Just dab the pressure plate with a small amount of peanut butter (Kraft works great) and it will draw chipmunks in. Though it's a bit messy, the cage can be easily cleaned off with the garden hose. The trap should be rinsed off after each capture/release.It's nice to relocate them to a nearby conservation area instead of killing them. I recommend keeping the cardboard box the trap comes in so you can drop the trap with the animal into it for transportation. It not only keeps them calm, but also keeps your vehicle clean. It's a good idea to wear gloves when opening the trap. Though all the released animals ran away quickly, I did not want to run the risk of being nipped by these animals, especially the squirrels. I also felt it wise not to handle the trap with bare hands until cleaned.Last point is that THIS trap is the one that works! Not the knock-offs or double-door ones. It's solidly built, dependable and will last your lifetime. This brand. This model. It works.

Best rat trap EVER!
Love this cage! We've had the bigger Havahart 1077 cage that we purchased a decade ago to trap and relocate nuisance squirrels. We had a batch that was creating quite the mess on our soffits and killing them wasn't something I felt comfortable with. We had mixed success catching rats (we moved and are located close to a creek so we get lots of rats). Rat poison is not something we felt comfortable with and the larger cage we had wasn't sensitive enough to trigger the door. Bait would get eaten all the time it was frustrating! We put a security night vision cam directed at the larger cage to see what was going on. The rats would go in and out without triggering, it was funny to capture the travels on the "rat cam". In looking at other Havahart cages, I felt this smaller 0745 one might be better. Ordered it with free shipping, I was willing to wait. Within 24 hours of receiving it, I caught three critters! Baiting it with peanut butter I was able to catch a squirrel, reset it and catch a rat the first night and after resetting it caught another squirrel within hours! The lever is very sensitive (great design!) so it would likely catch the smallest rats (or even mice possibly). LOVE IT!!!! I like the way I can remove the door to rebait without thinking it's going to snap close on me like the bigger Hanahart 1077 trap I was using. Get the right version for the critter you need to catch. This one works beautifully for squirrels and rats. I now have to find someone in town with a snake that needs live feed... Might as well put these critters to good use! LOL I'm posting "ratcam" pictures for amusement. Enjoy!

Worked to catch a squirrel!
I received this trap yesterday and immediately set it outdoors to try to move just a few of the many squirrels that raid our bird feeders daily. We've tried all kinds of schemes to try to prevent them from reaching all the feeders. (Squirrel baffles on poles are okay, as long as the pole is at least 10 feet away from any jumping-off points. We don't have that much room, since we have fences and trees and garage and poles etc all over the back lot.) When I set out the trap yesterday with peanuts behind the trigger pad, I could see them circling and inspecting the trap all day but none of them dared go into the cage. Last night my father told us they need to be conditioned to make their way toward the back of the cage, and suggested this strategy: leave a "trail" of peanuts leading from the front of the cage to the very back every day, and they will initially get away with freely taking the initial peanuts, while simultaneously learning to increasingly trust the cage. So I did that today, expecting it to take at least several days for the plan to work, and amazingly, it worked within hours! We caught a squirrel and put the cage in the trunk to transport it to a huge nearby natural parkland with endless trees. We were surprised to see the squirrel had eaten all of the peanuts in the cage while we were transporting it -- only took 15 minutes from capture to release! When we opened the door it scurried out at massive speed, into the woods and hopefully into a happy life in the forest (even if it takes some initial getting used to). Now we're hoping to catch and release a few more squirrels (and let the rest stick around) to at least give the local wild birds a chance at those winter feeders. Maybe it will mean less damage to my spring/summer vegetable garden too. (I'm considering also buying the larger trap for raccoons that always eat the spring eggs in nests, although I'd be more afraid of the part where I'd have to release it. Picturing getting my face scratched off.) Happy with this product.

very usefull, if you planning to catching then releasing then you need a tray for transport in case the animal pee
works very well for the intended purpose (relocating squirells)if you put the right bait it will literally take a matter of minutes before you catch one, you can then safely transport the animal to the location you want to realease it tonote though: the bottom is open so if they pee, maybe have a tray below if you putting it in your car

Got him
I bought this trap because we had a rat roaming our back yard. I didn't want to use a deadly trap in case it got a bird or squirrel. This trap worked perfectly - I caught the rat after 2 days, which I then relocated to a conservation area. Used a small piece of cheese and some bird seed for bait.

This trap works amazingly well!! Can’t praise it enough!
I’ve tried everything, to catch a smart rat that found a way into our house. I built various contraptions seen on YouTube, laid down rat poison, set plastic traps from hardware stores. For over 6 months everything failed, while the rat destroyed our basement pantry and started eating the wall studs. We were ready to call in the professionals rid us of this vandalizing critter. We decided to try one last time with the Havahart small rodent trap. Received it the day after ordering it, and baited it without arming it. The chocolate chips were gone the next day. Baited it a second time, same thing, next day the food was gone. Third day I took the “training wheels off”, baited it and armed it (so the door would drop down when the treadle was disturbed). Bingo! Finally caught the big rat (8 inches long, not including the tail). Drove him several miles away and released him into the greenbelt. The trap worked amazingly well, the door even locks when it drops. It’s a great, great buy!

Shipped early, trapped quick. Can’t ask for more.
This product was received a day early, which was great. Extremely easy setup, make sure to use peanut butter on the pressure plate - easiest meathod.Next morning, we had our problem squirrel trapped. He had managed to get into a stucco batten and likely did some damage behind.Use gloves! I place the little friend under a blanket, and we took a drive of about 5km out of town to a nice treed area. I found that covering the cage instantly stopped any struggle.5 ⭐️ rating for this 🐿 trap.Mind the power cable in the photo - I had to anchor it to the ledge so when he struggled he didn’t take a dive down the side of the deck.

It works!!!
We had an unvited chipmunk burrow in our front garden, right at the base of our peonies and again at the base of a very esablished hydrangea bush. This next to our front porch and I suspect they burrowed underneath and close to foundation...a definite no-no. Got this mid afternoon and put out at 4 pm but we got terrential rain then rain until this morning. No chipmunk...they obviously don't like getting wet either. Moved closer to hole (about 1.5' away) around noon today and went out to run errands. Got back around 4:30 pm and success!!! Alvin was in the cage looking quite innocent. So, less than 24 hours I had the guilty party.Put an old towel over the cage, picked up and put in the back of the truck. Drove down to rural road, pulled over next to heavily wooded area, put cage at edge of ditch facing woods with towel covering all 3 sides and pulled the latch. He came out after about 5 seconds, then scurried into the woods. Mission complete. It's now the trap is back in our garden bed just to be sure there is not a 2nd buddy occupying the burrows created.Awesome investment, even for future.EDIT: After first, caught three more within 36 hours, including one in our garage! I moved the trap in my garage for overnight storage due to expected rain, and did not bother to unset the trap. Unbenowst to me, a chipmunk must have snuck in the garage while the door was open and got trapped in overnight. I guess it decided it was hungry because next morning, I found the little guy in the trap on my bench!Since then, no more activity so going into storage for now. Again, great purchase.

Does exactly what it’s supposed to.
I have caught 6 chipmunks so far using this trap over the past month. I use two apple slices as bait. I’ve only caught my target pest, the chipmunk, and only once have I had the door shut with no animal inside. I’m guessing that was from a larger animal trying to get at the bait. Once when I found the chipmunk inside, the little guy (or, again, a larger animal) managed to flip the trap over and the door stayed shut as is it’s design. This trap does what it’s supposed to. 100% satisfaction here.

Easy to set up and very sensative
Well i have 2 xlarge traps and 2 medium sized ones..needless to say chipmunks and red squirrels are masters at squeezing thru 1" squares..i was dubious about buying this as i thought there was no way they would go inside..Wow was i wrong!!..in the 1st hour i trapped 2 black squirrels and 1 chipmunk..3 days in im now up 2 4 black squirrels,2 chipmunks and 1 red squirrel..i small piece of bread with peanut butter..snap its done!Easy to set up and very sensative..works amazingUpdate..:..well im now up to 6 chipmunks and 7 black squirrels!..so easy to set and bait..pour a bit of bird seed going inside the cage..put a cple of bread chunks with p butter at the back..they walk right in!!

Kiss your chipmunk problems good by!
I love these cute little guys, but after they chewed a hole through the wall of my house to get the sunflower seeds I was giving them in generous quantities everyday, and then crawled into the air conditioning filter box of my Honda CRV and destroyed the filter, as well as causing the fan to fail, enough was enough. I thought we had three maybe four munchkins to relocate, after all they all buy their fur coats from the same store, but no we ended catching 8 of them! Sometimes they go into the cage and the trap doesn't trip, so you need to carefully set the trip bars on the outside so they are in a hair trigger position. Anyway they all have a new home in the forest nearby with lots of seeds.

Two for Two!
After a squirrel ate a hole through the wall of my house trying to get to the bird seed inside the patio door (I had two squirrels coming to the deck feeder, regularly) I ordered the Havahart 0745. Long story short. Last evening in the space of an hour, caught and relocated BOTH of them. The trap, though a little finickity to set, getting the two bars braced against each other, worked great. Have set it to see if any more squirrels come around before I see about sealing up the hole, not wanting to trap any inside.

Wow , it works !
I had bought a similar item from TSE store recently thinking that a trap is a trap , not true . Even though they look similar, they are not . I set the trap from TSE store , baited it and left it where the rodent problem was. I checked it daily and noticed that every day the bait ( peanut butter) was gone off of the trip plate , resetting 3 times with no captures . I took it back and checked other traps and to my surprise they also wouldn't trip . So I looked on line for suggestions on traps , the Haveahart came up on tops . Ordered one from Amazon , got it the next day . I set it and within an hour I caught my first chipmunk . Released him else where and reset the trap and again within an hour caught another one . Caught 4 more within the next day . Wow ! JohnClifton

Squirrels in my area are too smart.
The squirrels in my neighbourhood must be too smart for this kind of gravity trap...If I set the trigger rods normally they just take the bait without triggering the trap.If I set the rods off-center to trigger easier, it just catches nothing.I have essentially been just feeding the squirrels for the past few days. The ~2 squirrels on my roof has now multiplied to at least ~4 freeloading squatters with the promise of free peanuts.I feel like a spring loaded mechanism would be much more effective.

Got the job done
I have a neighbourhood squirrel that visits me everyday for peanuts. Last week I noticed that she had a swollen eye, so I bought this trap to capture her so I could take her to a wildlife centre for treatment. I had her in the cage in under 5 minutes. She is now at a wildlife centre receiving treatment for conjunctivitis. This cage was super simple to operate and worked exactly as expected. It was very sturdy and came completely assembled and was good value for the money. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it is advertised as being for a squirrel, but it is actually too short. She is an adult Eastern Grey squirrel and when she climbed in and activated the trap, the door slammed down on her tail (because the cage itself is not long enough). Luckily she wasn't injured, but she could have been. If I had known this I would have ordered the bigger (longer) size. The last thing I want to do is injure the animal I am trying to catch, especially when I am trying to catch them because they are ill and need medical attention. But if you want to capture a chipmunk, rat or small squirrel this trap is a good size.
