Delightful
A delightful book with delightful characters. Brother Cadfael, the mediaeval Benedictine monk who plays detective, is a charming character. I believe there is a whole series of books with Cadfael as the protagonist and I look forward to reading more of them.

The first and definitely good, if not best mystery in this series
The reason I said not the best , is because I quite like this series and hope to continue enjoying the other books in the series and finding better ones, still waiting for me. That is what a lover of books always hopes.Though framed as a whodunnit, it has a quite a story around it, including sweet little instances of not just mystery but even love and friendship among the cast of characters. The best part is the ending which is not just satisfying but also immensely funny and gratifying in its twist.

great start to the Cadfael series
This is actually my Re-reading of the first Cadfael book, after many years of enjoying the whole of the 20 novels thirty or forty years ago. What I grinned at throughout was the cynical view of priesthood and of miracles without giving up on the power of popular belief. The building blocks of later novels are all here: the innocent glow of youth, the beauty and strength of women, the wisdom of mature men, and of course love of the people and landscape of Wales. Well paced story-telling , suspense, romance, all indulge the reader with an salty edge that allows for the relativity of truth in win-win social and spiritual outcomes.

Love this book.
Margaret Frazier is my favorite mystery writer. Her writing is like cream. Her plots give the reader wonderful details about the period and Cadfael is a delight. I enjoy rereading her books. Put

Superbly written and wonderfully authentic
I started reading the Cadfael Series alongside rewatching the TV adaptation, a bit of a shame they didn’t use the same order as the books! This first story has Cadfael going to Wales with the other monks, set against the King Stephen/Queen Maud situation. So we’ll written, with authentic descriptions and language and a satisfying amusing ending. Now looking forward to reading the prequel before continuing with the next book in the Series.
