A Must-Have for Sociologists of Culture
Becker's Art Worlds is a classic. Not only does he define "art world," which is critical for the study of the arts, but he covers so many topics of the arts (from creation, to sales, to networks, etc). This book is like the Bible of art worlds and can be applied in so many ways, beyond what most people consider "fine art." A serious must-have for anyone studying the arts in sociology.

and still a good read, but some of the work it influenced ...
A very influential classic, and still a good read, but some of the work it influenced have honored it by building on it, and making it less essential: Sarah Thornton's SEVEN DAYS IN THE ART WORLD, for example, is a punchier text to pout in students' hands. Also, the art world continues to play out its history, giving rise to the need for some updating. The abiding classic in the field, in my view, continues to be Bourdieu's DISTINCTION.

Good sociology
Readable and good scholarly work. Becker takes apart the art world to peer inside at all the moving parts. Definitely a must for sociologists studying culture.
