Size:5 Pound Bulk Its brilliant color and pungent aroma lend sumac its truly unique profile. Sumac powder comes from sun-dried berries of a wild shrub that grows in southern Italy. A common ingredient in Arabic spice blend za'atar, sumac has a lemony flavor and is great for seasoning meats, stews and sauces. For seasoning, use 1 teaspoon sumac per 1 pound of meat.

It works.
I’m 68 and most of what I eat these days is designed to be anti-inflammatory to keep pain and stiffness at bay or at least reduced. The sumac is one more way to do that, and I noticed a difference in my knee and hip pain and stiffness within the first few days of use. When I ran out and had to wait a few days to get re-supplied,the pain came back. Went back to using it and a few days later the pain and stiffness went away. SOLD!

contains salt
Contrary to Amazon's inaccurate product description, this sumac isn't "pure." It also contains salt (less than 1% according to the label)! Also it had a stale taste. And it was ground too finely and lacked the bright color we've seen in other bottled sumac. (The dark color shown in the Amazon photo exactly corresponded with the color of the spice itself as seen through its clear glass jar.) Disappointing.

Great flavor!
Sumac is a spice used in Lebanese cooking, but it's impossible to find in my town. I'm Lebanese and wanted to use this spice in my Lebanese cooking, so was thrilled to find it in organic form on Amazon. I wasn't disappointed. It's fresh, aromatic, and has a citrusy flavor when cooked. I like to use it on baked chicken breasts with olive oil. I highly recommend this unusual spice from Spicely Organics, which I will only buy from Amazon in the future.

Very nice, under-appreciated spice
Zatar bread is a tasty, tart & salty snack from the Middle East. A simple way to make it is to mix this Sumac with twice as much oregano and some extra virgin olive oil, and then spread it on some pizza dough and bake in the oven (being careful not to let it burn). This is my favorite sumac so far. I have also used it as a spice in place of (or to augment) lemon juice. It has antioxidant properties.

Salt added!
Salt is now listed as an ingredient on the package, but there is no indication as to how much. This is no where to be found in the item description. I've purchased this in the past (at a lower price) and I'm pretty certain there was no salt added. Very disappointing and deceptive...I may stop ordering products from this company altogether.

I have been looking for this for over 20 years!
I had a friend that immigrated from Iraq about 30 years ago. With him came his mom and family. She made the most wonderful dinners with tastes I had never had before. She gave me a small jar of this sumac, but she didn't know how to say it in english. For years I carried around a small baby food jar with this in it asking anyone I thought may know what it was. I had tried several gourmet shops arabic stores etc. yet no one could solve my dilemma. She used this in a marinade for lamb or beef shish kabobs. She kept telling me it was all spice (it was a spice she used on all meats, eggs etc.) It tastes nothing like any all spice I have ever tried, but it is soon to become my "all spice" Now that I have found it I will order it frequently. If you like to try different tastes be sure to pick some of this up. It has almost a dill taste. Flavor seems to stay at the front of the mouth. I think it would be very good for those on a sodium restricted diet. It doesn't have salt in it, but stimulates the area of the mouth that salt does.

Lead exposure risk
It tastes good, not a strong taste but interesting. But my son read the label which says “this product may expose you to lead”. Why would an organic spice have lead? Yuck!

Tart, robust, almost citrus flavor
We fell in love with sumac after a great meal at an Iranian restaurant, been buying it for our own spice rack ever since. Delicious! This brand is tart, almost citrus-like flavor but much more robust and full-bodied. Great for both meats and veggies/starches. These jars have always been fresh.
