Q: What is the purpose of the red slider above the on/off switch

The red switch is a low frequency roll off switch. You can have a flat frequency response or a response with the low frequencies tapered off. Helpful when you want to remove low frequency room rumble.

Q: I put a battery in the mic, and when I turned it on, the light came on for a split second and then went off. It won't record. Help please?!?!?!?!!!!

This is a little late but the light is supposed to only come on for a split second to signal that the battery is still working. If it doesn't come on when powering up the mic, the battery is dead. As for the mic recording in only the left or right channel, this is also correct. The mic records in Mono, aka single channel. To achieve a Stereo sound with this mic you must split the audio in two to create a stereo effect. It's very easy to do. Nothing is wrong with the mic if the light flashes once or if the mic records in mono. It's built to do exactly those things and are not setback at all.

Q: Does it come with the XLR cord?

Hello, it does not come with the XLR cord.

Q: Will this give me pro audio (comparable to rode's NTG-3 or Sennheiser MKH-416)?

Maybe not as good as the 416 but right up there with the NTG-3. I get great audio with this microphone.
