Q: I want to interface with obd2 port, is the only required connection can h/l? i am connected and i don't see any traffic with a logic analyzer anywhere

You'll need to connect three pins: Pin 6 - CAN Hi, Pin 14 - CAN Lo, and either Pin 4 - Chassis Ground or Pin 5 Signal Ground.

Q: Will this work with the beagle bone black and can i use one on each of the two canbus ports?

Hi Dear, SN65HVD230 CAN Board is for CAN interface. If you need use for BB black, you may need to add this expansion board as below link shows. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q8J55C0?Amazon.

Q: What library is being used for successful coms? i have an esp32 feather and have tried several libraries to read can data on a vw with no luck!

Similar to STM32 and other master controllers, the module ESP32 connected to SN65HCD230 is also programmed in C language. The underlying library and STM32 also have many similarities.
