Auto gun safe.
I bought the security box to keep my pistol secure inside my pickup. I looked for the ability secure it inside my truck (the security cable), quick and easy access inside (large combination buttons and simple unlocking dial), key override (if combination fails), large enough to hold full size automatic and additional magazines (plenty of space to easily contain all and padding). The 3040DF has met all the requirements that I had. I am very satisfied with the product, and it is working out perfectly. The ordering, payment, shipment, and delivery process was easy and simple, pain free, and very quick.I am very satisfied with everything about the box and the whole process.Well done, Ed.

Does the job!
The first thing I noticed was First Alert merely put a sticker with their name over the name of the actual manufacturer, Honeywell.I'd say overall this box is the best one for carting around secured contents. It's not bulky and heavy like the fire resistant types, and the handle is the perfect touch in making it into basically a briefcase. The digital lock is cool, and there's plenty of room inside the box. The cable for attaching the box to something is a unique feature, and another reason why this is the best box .the not so greats about this box are that it's not a strong box by any stretch. You can get break into it barehanded if need be. Another problem is the batteries are frequently shifting just enough for the keypad not to work. Usually a good smack, and things are back to normal. Another issue is that it doesnt handle even small falls very good. Almost every box I've had startsed closing crooked immediately after the first fall. One time to my horror, it popped open in the middle of the street. But the smooth days far outweigh the mishaps, making this the best overall security box you can find.

Very limited protection
I'm not exactly sure what this box is supposed to protect against, but whatever it is, it doesn't do it very well. The top and sides of the box feels somewhat sturdy, but the bottom feels like it's made of sheet metal. Anyone who's ever worked with sheet metal knows how trivial it is to cut, bend, or punch a whole in. Further, there's a very noticeable "give" in the bottom of the box, so it feels like I could have actually pushed it in and detached it if I accidentally stepped on it. Needless to say, getting into the box once one has possession of it almost a given for anyone who's at all determined. The cable also offers very little protection. The cable is thinner than a bicycle-lock cable, and the loop on the end of it is half as thick as the cable itself. If you cut the loop, the entire cable becomes unfastened to whatever it was secured to so, essentially, the cable is only as thick as it's weakest part (the loop.) The loop is maybe a quarter inch thick, so you can get through it with a pair of good wire-cutters, which any thief worth the name should have with him.On the plus side, the convenience of having the security coded lock is nice. I haven't had any problems with it.I'd imagine that this box would prevent a smash-and-grab type of theft. It may also be useful if you wanted to secure something in your office cube from a sticky-fingered contractor or cleaning staff, or some other very casual thief. Maybe it's good for keeping things out of childrens hands.I would not recommend it for your car. I would hope a car safe would take at least 10 minutes for a thief to get out, and this doesn't meet that criteria.

Cheap Product
Cheap handle. It snapped off after a few times using it.

easy to set up
the box is not so heavy, but at the same time maybe can be easily open and carried away, if somebody tries to get into it. It serves the purpose to lock something important away, instead of letting it laying around in the apartment.

First Alert Security Box
First Alert Digital Security Box with CableThis is the 2ns security box I've purchased. In both instances I've purchased for my children living away @ college. The box securely via the cable secures to the bed (in my opinion, if someone is trying to steal the box, they are also taking the bed!) and fits most laptops, my children also secure their portable hard drives , cash and credit cards in these. A definite "must have" on the college packing list..the box is accessed by a code picked by the owner and also a key. Definitely a purchase well worth the $

Good Value for what you get
We purchased the First Alert 3040 DF Digital Security Box for my son's dorm room. It's just an extra layer of protection for your personal items, while you're away from your dorm room. The box came with the long cable that allows you to secure the box to the bed frame. It's a simple lock box that has the digital access code or key lock. It holds your laptop, wallet, i-pod, etc. I liked that the box was lined with a foam layer to protect the items. It's really nothing fancy. Can a thief still come in room and take your stuff? Sure, just like any other layer of protection whether in a home or a car. We have car alarms on our vehicles like most people and a home security system. These items like this safe box is just another layer of protection to try to defer a thief from stealing your personal items. Just like the car alarm, the home alarm, the dorm safe in my opinion makes the thief's plan a little more time consuming to accomplish.

Security Box
I have had this for awhile now and use it to store items of importance. It was supper easy to set up the combination and I had to reset it several times. Be sure to use premium batteries, the cheap ones I started out with failed and locked me out. It comes with two keys for times like this. I put in Duracel copper top batteries and they are still working after 6 months. Keep the keys in a safe place, I would suggest two different places, for emergencies. Top notch security box. It also comes with a cable to further secure it.
