The original blade suddenly started spinning independently when the motor was switched on - it appears that the 'cogs' holding it on to the spindle had broken. I bought a replacement from eBay but it was a slightly different shape and did not work if there was only a small amount in the mixing bowl. This one works perfectly so far and I have no complaints.
