Nostalgic
If you grew up in the 80s or are fascinated with the decade, you might enjoy this book. Many pop culture topics from the 80s were popular in the Stranger Things series. Topics range from food, fashion, gaming, commercials and more.

Reagan Bashing
I got this book as a birthday gift for my sister. I have watched the show sporadically, a few episodes here and there. Having grown up in the eighties, I was intrigued by the title. On page 105, the author says, "...the Upside Down can also be read as the darker underbelly of the idyllic surface of the Reagan era." That statement sums up the chapter The Reagan Era, as the author goes on to further bash the second greatest president of my lifetime (after President Trump). Upon completing this chapter, I filed the book to the garbage can where it belongs.

Damn typos
Love love love the concept showing the intersection of two amazing things but must admit that , being written by a college professor, the frequent typos really started becoming annoying. After about the first half dozen they marred what was an otherwise amazing book. A for subject. D for editing.

Enjoyable, but could be better
While this was fun to read for me as a huge fan of ST, I wished it provided more new info and insights. I appreciated the info about the intentions of the show’s creators from interviews. You also learn a bit about Eighties culture and some of the character analyses are on point. However, much of the book just retells and describes scenes from the show. And while doing that, it’s full of spelling mistakes (bad ones, and I’m not even a native speaker) and inaccuracies, which suggest sloppy research and editing. The show is misquoted several times (know it by heart, sorry) and events aren’t described accurately (for example the scene where eleven sees the demogorgon for the first time is mixed up with a later scene). How hard is it to rewatch scenes from a Netflix show to avoid those mistakes?

Great companion to the show
This book is exactly what I was looking for to pass the time while we wait for season 3. Well researched and thorough, this book explores the characters we love and the influences of an iconic decade. The two are integrated seamlessly for an excellent time travel adventure to Hawkins, Indiana.
