ROYKSOPP - Senior - desertcart.com Music Review: Royksopps greatest album since Melody A.M. - Keep in mind this is only opinion, but if you liked Melody A.M. and were dissapointed with the poppier feel of their previous two albums, you will love senior. Its more introspective and dark than any of their previous albums. It focuses more on their talent as electronic producers, they were able to create something entirely unique. Its a hauntingly beautiful instrumental masterpiece.. Pros: Some of their greatest tracks No poppy vocals The songs are long, yet remain interesting throughout I keep coming back to this album, it never ceases to amaze Cons The first song (...And the Forest Began to Sing) and the last song (A Long, Long Way) dissapointed me. Favorite Tracks: The Alcoholic The Fear Tricky Two Senior Living Forsaken Cowboy The Drug Coming Home Make sure you pick up their recent B-Side "Keyboard Milk" It is even better than most of the stuff on here Review: Even better (of course) - Senior, by default should be better than Junior, based solely on logic. Once again the new and strange end up becoming the beloved and unique. Viewing this cd as a "spiritual follow up" to Junior is an easy review, but its really more than that. Tricky two is a clear example of this idea. But Senior is so deep and almost tangible, that it, I think, will change even the biggest Royksopp fan's opinion of what Norway's best can bring us. I love this CD. I listened to it once, then put it on the shelf. Three months later, I listened to it 3 times in a row. Then once each day for three days. Each track really blends into the previous without overshadowing itself or any other track. This is the follow up to Junior, but Senior takes Junior to school.

Listening suggestion
If you feel a little neutral about Senior, but you enjoyed Junior, try this: In your favorite audio software and/or device, try a playlist alternating the tracks between Junior and Senior. In other words, set up track 1 of Junior, followed by track 1 of Senior, then track 2 of Junior, then track 2 of Senior, and so on. I think you'll find that (a) the tracks flow perfectly, and (b) you'll enjoy and appreciate the tracks of both albums more. Works for me. Your mileage may vary. [Edit: After several more play-throughs, I think this is the best idea I've had in a long time. I'll never go back to listening to them separately.] You may have noticed there is a "hidden track" starting at 5:33 in the track "A Long, Long Way" on Senior. I'm not particularly fond of that one so I edited it out (using the freeware program 'Audacity') and replaced it with "Keyboard Milk" from Röyksopp's Forsaken Cowboy single (mp3 download).

Probably Royksopp's best album
While my favorite Royksopp tracks are typically on other albums, I'd say that Senior is the most complete and cohesive album. All the tracks are more grown up sounding and lack the in-your-face-vocals which (for better or worse) are in their other albums. If had to pick a Royksopp album to listen to from start to finish, I'd pick Senior.

The Album name says it all
Senior is a wonderful reply to Junior. Instead of the friendly pop and hard synths that graced Junior, Senior is defined by slow moving, soft yet bass-rich tracks that don't demand much from the listener but to recline and enjoy.

Royksopp Senior
The video for Forsaken Cowboy is terrific and I can picture it in my head when I hear the music. Way too silly but true!

Excellent Album
A very interesting album that reinforces my opinion that this band is one of the best electronic artists around today.

Sort of "uneventful" but good
I think Royksopp is one of the better groups that's come along in a while. Compared to their previous albums, Senior doesn't seem to have much variety. It's pretty much all dark and moody without any "bright spots." It isn't even very "synthy." That's not necessary a bad thing but it IS a little one-dimensional. My favorite songs on Senior are The Alcoholic and Forsaken Cowboy.

When Junior came out, there were some Röyksopp fans of old who complained vociferously that this wasn't the laid back trippy sound of Melody A.M. they expected from the duo and had been waiting for since The Understanding. I loved their third album and still listen to the tracks and the official and unofficial remixes often, as indeed I do with their other two albums. There are some fans like me, who have loved every album so far, and others who only really liked one or two and complain that the others are not exactly the same as them. I like it best when bands move on, as sticking to one sound for too long can ruin their credibility and freshness. So now we have Senior, which I wouldn't be surprised if many Röyksopp fans had believed was going to be Melody A.M. 2.0. It's not that much like it, which is a relief to be honest - Melody A.M. was a record of its time, and I'm glad they haven't exploited it by mining that sound to recycle it - instead they have made a very introspective and often experimental album that lives up to their promise of a record that works best when you listen to it as a whole. Unlike Junior it is an instrumental album, though there are occasionally some faint and indistinct vocals floating around in the background, and occasionally voices come out into the foreground to jolt you out of whatever trance the record may have put you in. Fall asleep with this record on and near the end you will be woken into an anxious state by some weird and disturbing noises. If you're in two minds about getting this album, listen to Tricky Two, The Drug and Forsaken Cowboy. The other tracks are great too, but these three will sell it to you. Tricky Two, as you could probably guess, takes the main hook and some other elements from its hyperactive `younger' sibling Tricky Tricky and mixes it all into an ever building powerhouse of a track that somehow manages to keep a laid back feel throughout. To describe the other tracks - the ones you don't already know some element of - would run the risk of not doing them justice.
