Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex: A Collection of Her Short Stories, Fables, and Lesser-Known Writings, Revised Edition

Supplement to The Diary of Anne Frank
This is a necessary addition to "Anne Frank - The Diary of a Young Girl" because there are references to stories and fablies in this book from which Anne Frank, in her diary, refers. This is a book worth reading, because it not only answers any questions the reader of the original book might have, but it contains stories reflecting Anne's outlook on life. Anne, in spite of her captivity (hiding from the Nazis), was still an optimist and looked upon humanity as mostly good.In the first part of the book, you have the impression that the entires should be in her main diary itself, because it tells of her situation, her hiding, and her impressions of her fellow "captives" and how they react in life. For example, in rationing food, one person is greedy and wants the most, or the best, for himself. Some are selfish and self centered in other ways, and the only person Anne really respects is her own father, for he is the most understanding of her, and possibly her boyfriend, Peter. A young child, especially a girl, can see a lot in adults that they cannot see in themselves. Anne seemed to be the most aware of what was happening around her. She was, aside from her father, the most mature person there. The book then proceeds to telling stories, then fables, up to an unfinished tale, "Cady's Life."This stories, surprisingly, do not reflect gloom and doom of the real world (except Cary's Life, in some parts, telling of the Nazis) but convey the message of doing good and giving everything you have, getting much more in return, though the latter must not be the motive. A fairy inherits a large sum of money, but gives it all away withing a year to the needy, but is revered by them forever afterward. A girl who loved and cared for her grandmother then loses her, but the grandmother then beomes her guardian angel. Other tales involve animals, still others involve teaching a lesson in life, and others tell you not to be obsessed with fame and fortune, for they are not what they seem. None of them end tragically. This shows Anne's observation of life, her maturity, and her optimism towards humanity. This was definitely very challenging for Anne, with death and destruction hovering over her, surrounded by seemingly unpleasant people, except her father and boyfriend, though there were people trying to hide her that show her compassion. This is a lesson to anyone reading this book. If Anne can have a good attitude, despite her present situation and what was going to happen to her (she was captured by the Nazis and put into a concentration camp, where she died of typhus), then perhaps other people in not so bad surroundings can handle what life gives them, good or bad.

Beautiful Book
This is a beautiful book that is well compiled! The binding is glue so the pages are loose after one reading but that does not change the quality of the edition.

Anne Frank
I heard about Anne Frank, but to hold this book in my hands and read it became overwhelming but also a good read. Need more, but sadly unrealistic.

I was expecting a diary as if Anne's book was going to detail the family's life and her insights in that terrible time of war
I was absolutely stunned by this book. I was expecting a diary as if Anne's book was going to detail the family's life and her insights in that terrible time of war. Instead, the reader is treated to short stories from the brilliant mind of a young girl. I believe this book should be on the must read list for all high school kids. Not only does it bring out the courage of Anne Frank, but it shows how a real imagination can be put to work in the most creative ways. This book is a treasure. Please read it.

Greatest masterpiece ever created by a young and remarkable girl
I absolutely love this book so much because I am such a huge fan of Anne Frank, I have copies of her diaries too and this book serves such an importance for me. I also wished she would have survived the war so she can continue with her work and projects :). Thank you for reading and this book deserves an award!!

A historically important and insightful collection of writing
The book is split into three sections: the first reveals snapshots of life in the annexe and reminiscences, interesting additional material for anyone who has read The Diary of Anne Frank. The second contains short pieces of fictional writing, and the third section is the novel that Anne started. Anne comes across as a spirited, lively, confident, intelligent and outspoken girl and some of her pieces are more poignant and thoughtful than most adults could write, and it’s so sad that we never got to see how her writing would have progressed as she matured. There are some very moving lines, such as ‘Perhaps I’ll understand when I’m that old’; she has an unwavering belief that she will survive, but of course the reader knows that she will never be ‘that old’. This book, and Anne’s Diary, are must-reads partly for their historical value and the circumstances in which they were written, but also because there is some genuinely insightful writing here, especially about the power of nature and her musings on what it means to be a good person.

Wonderful
If you find lack of hope and happiness in your life I would recommend you to read these two books by Anne Frank a teenager. Her writing style is different and very lively. It is mesmerizing that a girl of this age can have thoughts so enlightened.
