Cyperus papyrus is the original papyrus that lined the river Nile during the time of the pharoahs. This sedge grass has a triangular stem and it has been used by man for millennia. It's the white pith inside the stem that is soaked in water, pounded together and dried to create paper. Indeed, Papyrus is where the word paper originates. Cyperus can be used outdoors as a marginal pond plant as its roots like to be wet. It can also be used as a house plant, provided it is watered well. Indeed, it is one of only a few house plants that can't be killed by overwatering! The stems can grow to a height of 3m, although they will be contained by the size of the pot. It's a clump-forming grass that gradually spreads. The stems are topped by feathery clusters which resemble umbrellas. Also known as umbrella grass for this reason. In the wild it can become invasive but in the colder UK this is unlikely. Not entirely hardy in the UK.Protect from frost or treat as a house plant.Sold in a 17cm pot.Total height, including pot, is approximately 80cm.

Beautiful, healthy plant that does very well outdoors in summer, in a sunny position.
This plant is gorgeous! It arrived big and fully grown and undamaged. I have it planted in a stone urn in my garden, underplanted with lobelia, and I hope to bring it into the house for the winter. Fantastic plant, highly recommended! Just make sure you water it regularly, it grows naturally in marshy soil so it should never be allowed to dry out for long periods, although mine did get slightly crispy at one point but with increase in watering it recovered beautifully,
