The Dress: 100 Ideas that changed Fashion
One of the few books I have seen that actually still deals with beautiful dresses. But this book shows some of the most beautiful updated dresses by International designers. An interesting section on Alexander McQueen and his dresses which are always unique to say the least. In an age where the pants has taken over a lot of women's apparel, it is nice to see that a dress can still be beautiful, sexy, elegant and interesting.

Great photos, bad writing
The book is beautifully illustrated with lots of clear, interesting, colorful photos of beautiful dresses. Photos are the main reason I buy a fashion book. The writing, however, is pretty bad--pretentious, clumsy, convoluted, and difficult to understand. The author writes like an art history major from a small liberal arts college, and she badly needed an editor. I once asked an art history professor why art writing is so bad, and she said that art history majors aren't taught how to write clearly, and "we're visual people anyway." So, buy this book for the photos, not the writing.

Great history AND photos
I'm not sure I'd agree that "gingham" was an idea that changed fashion forever, but overall, the 100 ideas described in this fabulously-photographed book are important in fashion history. It's amazing to see how quickly fashion changed in some eras---from the overly structured late 1700s to the Empire periods, for example. I also appreciate the construction details which explain how the "bubble," to name one, was made both in early years and then when newer materials were available. My only regret is that some of the designers and examples cited in the text are not illustrated; in most cases, only a single two-page spread is devoted to each idea. Reading this book is a little like eating a rich, flavorful dessert: you can't decide whether to rush through it because it's so wonderful or force yourself to stick to a slow pace.

100 dresses, 100 ideas.
100 dresses, 100 ideas. The author identifies each innovativeidea and follows the reverberations. The dresses date from the 19th century to thepresent. The photos come from a variety of sources and are, themselves, a tour deforce in the exacting art of fashion photography. The credits from museums around theworld are a reminder of the dedication to this very popular field of history by so manyexpert curators and collection managers.

Sublime
Absolutely beautiful coffee table book!! Really nice approach to the dress based on themes.. A bit of history behind without being necessarily chronological or "historic". Really enjoyable reading with fabulous pictures to go along. Nice choices of dresses to illustrate the styles. I simply loved it!
