John Denver's Greatest Hits

It's the same music that I had always listened to when I was young and kept listening. It's wonderful music and makes me able to relax and enjoy all of the music.

Essentially I'm comparing this new remastered version of this wonderful album with 2 previous cd releases. First off, this version is miles ahead of the original US release. I always did think the original was poorly mastered, or used a poor master tape, or both. Anyway, tape hiss abounds on the original and the music is rather tinny sounding, but in the remastered version hiss is almost inaudible and the tinny sound is gone, replaced with a much fuller, richer sound. There was a second cd release, however, only in Japan. They remastered it using 20 bit mapping and it, too, is miles ahead of the first US release. I'll still give the edge to this new remastered version, although if you already have the Japanese reissue I don't think you'll find the new US remaster that much of an improvement to warrant purchasing. The 3 bonus tracks on this US remaster aren't anything to write home about since they're readily available on other releases. They're fine songs, particularly "I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado," but since John re-recorded some of the songs for this compilation I would have thought adding the original album versions of those songs, or at least some of them, would have been a more interesting move, since the new arrangements are significantly different, but they didn't consult me. Or why not add some previously unreleased material as bonus tracks? This album still holds a place on RCA's top selling albums of all time list, and deservedly so. I prefer the new arrangements to the old for the most part, and it's a wonderful compilation of some of the best songs from his first six albums. If you're buying this album for the first time, get this remastered version. You won't regret it.

Very mellow and enjoyable!

Overall, this is a terrific CD with some of Denver's very best songs, but I deducted one star because it unfortunately leaves out a few hits such as "Thank God I'm a country Boy" iand "Annie's Song" n favor so some lessor known songs. I had the good fortune of being able to see John Denver in concert and I can honestly say he put on a wonderful show. He performed in the round in an almost informal performance without the crazy pyrotechnics so many performers today utilize. The songs here are all enjoyable, well recorded and really exhibit Denver's versatility as a singer, song writer and musician. I just wish it had included a few more of John's most famous and well received hits . But for the price, I am very happy with the CD.

I am not a huge John Denver aficionado, so I am not in a position to comment on whether this is a definitive collection of John Denver or whether anything important was left off the album. Neither am I a super audio-technophile, so I can't comment on the technical aspects of production. All I can say is that I have very fond memories of Take Me Home Country Roads, Poems Prayers and Promises, and I Guess He'd Rather Be in Colorado from when I was a young man (I used to play the last two songs on my guitar a lot), and it was great to hear these songs again. Kinda wish My Sweet Lady was on this album, and I wondered if perhaps I shouldn't have gotten the Poems, Prayers, and Promises album on CD. Six-in-one, half-a-dozen in the other--P,P&P contains some songs I don't care for so much, while the Greatest Hits has some wonderful tunes that the earlier album doesn't, such as Follow Me and P,P&M's Jet Plane.

This album was made near the beginning of John Denver's massive success, he had had only a few hits at the time, his real success was yet to come, and he was yet to be the top recording artist of the 70s. He re-recorded several previous hits for this album. Denver was a force of nature; quite literally so, given his environmental work, which was well ahead of present day meddling. In terms of the music, John chose backing tracks which are not the best. Later recordings show his vocal range better. John Denver on the stage was staggering and could not be beaten. He held the audience in a theatre or stadium in his hands and had the ability to make his songs personal for every member of the audience. I say that the backing tracks are not the greatest, but it was a massive hit at the time, being in the charts for months. It is still, what it was meant to be, an introduction to the greatest popular musician of the time. None better. Later recordings, studio and live, only improve on this album, as his 'band' and orchestra began to include the best musicians available, total class, who he was proud to work with. This appreciation of his backing musicians is shown in the fact that he always introduced them as equals at live shows and by the fact that it is applauded in the recent book about his career, written by a colleague. If you bought this album and enjoyed it, please try all earlier and later recordings, perhaps starting with 'Poems & Prayers and Promises and going on to 'All Aboard.' There are earlier albums, but I believe that 'Poems Prayers and Promises' is the first that really shows John's the new style, that was to make him a global star
