If you don't put the effort into surface preparation, no product will work.
As far as cold Blue goes, Brownell's Oxpho-Blue is the best product I've used so far. You have to prep the surface correctly, I use brake clean and spray down the surface first, then Dawn's dish soap and scrub and scrub and scrub and cut no corners! When you think it's clean enough, wash it again and rinse with cold water. I use paper towels to dry the surface (wearing latex gloves so not to leave any oils from my skin) thoroughly. Apply the bluing in even and thorough coats, let sit for no more than 60 seconds and rinse with cold water. I then use 4-0000 steel wool to blend the color evenly on whatever I'm bluing. If it's not dark enough, wash with dish soap again because the steel wool has some oil in it, rinse with cold water, dry, repeat until shade has been reached.

Brownell's Oxpho Blue. Liquid gold
Stripped the finish off of an inexpensive RIA 9mm 1911 because I wanted a blued finish on the frame and slide flatsthat looked a little aged. Been using Oxpho for years and I knew what it would do. Any true gun enthusiast knows Brownell's. Oxpho is the bomb.

Has great review everywhere.
Another excellent product from Brownells. I haven't had a chance to use it yet due to the weather. Should be used in a well ventilated area. Follow the directions carefully and test in an inconspicuous area.
