I really, really wanted to love this book. It's very well written and researched. What I found dissapointing really has nothing to do with the book, but hiking with your dog in AZ in the first place. We visited Tucson and planned to use this book with our 40 lb young lab mix - however we found most of the hikes we wanted to go on didn't allow dogs in the first place!Then I read the really great section on things to watch out for - heat, scorpions, snakes, cactus in the paws, mountain lions, javelinas, and coyotes. The coyotes are HUGE in AZ! I grew up with 20-30 lb coyotes in MT - usually solitary. In Tucson there were packs of coyotes that looked to be 70-80 pounds - all over the city limits/washes etc. in the daytime, as well as night.If you already own dogs in the SW and are accustomed to the terrain/dangers etc., I would recommend this book. If you travel their occasionaly with your mid sized pooch, I recommend wearing them out first - then hiking without them. :)

I recently moved to Tucson and was hoping to rely on this book to find local hikes. After a month here, in my opinion, there are much better hikes in the region than what is listed in this book. Most of the hikes are out and back, with very few loop hikes. Additionally, many of the trailheads require high clearance and/or 4WD. There's a nice table at the front of the book that summarizes details of each hike - 4WD required would be a nice addition to that table so those can easily be ruled out.On the 2nd hike I tried from this book, I found inaccurate information regarding where dogs are allowed in Catalina State Park. I even stopped in to the ranger station (which sells this book) to review the hike to see if I was confused. The book has you crossing into a dog restricted area which I was not comfortable doing. The whole point of buying this book was to hike where dogs are allowed.

Love this book! It's been so helpful to find some really cool (and not too busy) trails that I can take my dog on. I've found it to be very accurate. The only non-accurate information is that the book says you can go into the Pusch Ridge Wilderness with your dog. Since publication this is no longer the case as Bighorn Sheep have been reintroduced into the area and so no dogs are allowed. Not a huge issue though since at the time of publication the information was accurate and books like this are always subject to trails changing.

The parts I read before she chewed it up was super helpful & matched my experiences on hikes we’d done.

Just picked up this book to plan our trip to Arizona. While we obviously haven't had a chance to use the guide yet, I did compare it against some Grand Canyon hikes we did a few years ago and against some other books I've picked up.Directions to trailheads is very clear.Information on trails is well-presented, giving more than enough information to decide if the trail is appropriate for you and your pet.Trails directions are well-written and seem easy to follow.I can't see any negatives to this book so far. It has already been a great help in deciding where to hike.

i bought this book a while ago, and took one of the hikes this morning, with my 2 dogs. the directions and terrain descriptions were spot-on. we hiked for 6 miles (round trip) along a river bank the whole way, and in the shade for the majority of the hike, so it was a great experience for me and my dogs. now that i know i can trust the author's judgment, i'll be taking more of the hikes she names in her book.

I love this book! I wish it was a little more "flip through it to find a good spot today" instead of a read through to find information, but it still helped us find some good hiking spots.
