Hesse: The Wanderer and His Shadow

A must read for all avid readers of Hesse. Very grateful to the translator and publisher for getting this is english.More than an autobiography. This book is taps into his soul and the culture of his time.

I’m in the minority here. While the information is interesting, to me the writing has no flow. Too many of the sentences are, long, twisty and awkward. The book reads like a translation. It is not a pleasure read.One other point . . . the author constantly makes reference to contemporary, mostly German or Swiss, works. Unless the reader is an academic, these digressions become pointless and annoying.
