The call distance for this SINGCALL wireless calling system is 130-200ft(40-60m) indoors, 1600-2600ft(500-800m) in the open air. 
The distance and the material of the wall will affect the distance of the call. Since you did not tell some details such as the distance, we cannot give you an accurate answer, but you can refer to the distance above. If you want to transmit a longer distance, you can buy a SINGCALL wireless signal amplifier(ASIN: B00EC6OZ7M).

Is it possible to keep the display off in standby mode?  Don’t want the clock showing.   Can you turn this off?

Thank you for your question.
The standby mode (time display mode) can not be changed and you can change the number display time to only show the number rather than the clock. Please follow below steps to set [F03] to [00].([00]means unlimited display )
Display time setting
1)Standby mode, keep pressing key [FUN] till [F01] appears.
2)Press key [UP]/[DOWN] repeatedly till [F03] appears.
3)Keep pressing key [FUN] till a number [20]appears.
4)Keep [UP]/[DOWN]to choose the display time wanted.
[01～99]means 1-99 seconds [00]means unlimited display 
5)Keep press [FUN]for 3 seconds, the screen shows [F03].
6)Keep pressing [ENT]back to standby mode, time display setting finished.
