Thru a program of organic amendments like Azomite rock dust to actively aerated compost teas and ...
I have been building the fertility of my garden soils for the past 4 years since I created the first raised beds. Thru a program of organic amendments like Azomite rock dust to actively aerated compost teas and biochar, I have been putting it all on there. I have been learning all along the way. I decided to kick it up a notch this year with some Worm Castings in bulk. I currently use all my kitchen scrapes for soldier fly larvae so I don't have much left for a worm bin. The idea of another component that needs daily or weekly maintenance and tending wasn't appealing either. I may try an "in-garden" worm tower in the future but for now I was looking for some good castings at a good price. I have been using castings in my AACT (actively aerated compost tea) recipes for several years now and am familiar with a couple of brands. I wasn't sure how this Unco Industries Wiggle Worm brand would compare, but after getting some in, all I can say is that I'm highly impressed.Worm Gold Plus has been my first choice brand for years. But with limited availability here on Amazon, I decided to look at other options. I received in my compost tea kit I ordered this year, a couple of pounds worth from a brand called Organic Solutions. It is also not listed in quantity on Amazon. I finally settled on the 30 lbs bag from Wiggle Worm and took a chance and ordered it. Sold By Amazon with Prime Shipping it was only $24. What a bargain for 30 lbs. I was such a good price with good feedback I had to try it. So now I have 3 brands on hand to compare. If you don’t see it listed for $24 be sure to check out “new available from other sellers”.Here are some photos of all 3. And here are my observations:None of the castings have a bad odor. All of them smell earthy and nice. They all have a nice dark chocolatey brown color.Worm Gold Plus - The bag I have is much more compacted than the other 2 brands. I have to break it apart to use it. There are few clearly defined castings. It is a bit thick like clay. It takes a bit of work and time to break the clods apart especially for adding to your soil mixes where you may want a finer texture. The issue I have with it is that it is/has or is heading toward going anaerobic conditions.Organic Solution - These castings were fine and moist and easy to flow thru your fingers after grabbing a handful. There were lots of little bits of what looks like woody material mixed in. If this material is there to foster and grow more fungi then I will have to say that it is my favorite. There are a lot of little critters running around that you can see with the naked eye too. These castings are produced in California by a family owned company in smaller batches. The food source given to the worms are pre-consumer waste stream products that are free from toxins and contaminants. It is high in chiton and microbes that use chiton as a food source. Supposedly these microbes will live on your plants and provide a deterrent to pests landing on your plants for dislike of getting eaten by these microbes. Also when worms consume chiton it is broken down into chitonase which is then absorbed by the plants and when aphids and the likes begin to feed on the plants that have chitonase in their systems, it as an enzyme will begin to dissolve their exoskeletons. High chitonase worm castings are an excellent natural insect repellent. Supposedly you can put them 1/4” thick on fire any beds to get rid of them! Well I tried it and it actually worked. 3 days later the ant bed was abandoned. I think this has to be my favorite brand of all. I limit using these to my compost teas and prized plantings. But to get 30 lbs worth would cost around $40 or more plus shipping. This is the best stuff around IMO, but I was looking for good quality bulk castings to add in quantity to my transplants and garden beds.Unco Industries Wiggle Worm Castings - These are moist and of a fine texture. It is very consistent in appearance. It is produced by UNCO Industries out of Oregon. They have been in business since 1976. These are also very good quality castings. For bulk application rates these can’t be beat for the price if you order it from Amazon for $24 per 30 lb bag shipped Prime. I have ordered 3 bags of these this year and plan on ordering more. Thank you Amazon.5 stars for an affordable, quality product. Just what I was looking for. Now to get that garden growing with some record size and flavored veggies and fruits. Happy Gardening!

Overall product quality poorer than earlier orders
I have bought/ordered this product over the past few years. I even have some left over from my prior order. The latest shipment is of poorer quality as there are sand added to the worm casting to give it more weight - adulteration. With addition of sand, the worm casting dries up faster. My old lot is still moist as it does not contain sand, just pure worm casting. I use to recommend this brand of worm casting to all my gardening friends. Not anymore. After this latest shipment, I'm very disappointed. Will be looking for other brand of worm casting.

This is some good $***!!!
Earthworm feces, black gold... Let me give you the straight poop on this poop. This is what your plants are ailing for. I had a Padron pepper plant that went through some rough times. It was 6 inches tall with 2 leaves barely clinging to the stem. It looked like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. I uprooted it from the garden and potted it, I was sure this would kill it. I used a 70/30 ish mix of top soil to worm castings. That little plant that was 2 months behind the rest has now caught up. It virtually exploded. Stalk growth looks like a healthy 4 month old plant. Buds are a poppin. It is peppered with peppers. It did in 4 weeks what the rest took 7 or 8 to do. Get some of this stuff. Use lots. Grow stuff.

Best thing I ever added to my starting mix
This is worth gold. It's so good in my starter mix it "ruined" my garden last year! I planted my tomatoes and peppers on the same schedule as always, but the plants grew so fast, they were too big too early! I had to move them into 3 gallon pots before it was warm enough because they grew to 2 feet tall. Moving 50 tomatoes in 3 gallon pots is no easy task each day (sun outside, but house is too dark). I ended up planting them in the ground too early and got caught with late spring frost. This year I'm planting my tomatoes and peppers about 6 weeks later than with any commercial starter mix thanks to this wonderful earth worm product. This saves me on growing lights and having plants too big too early. I mix these worm castings with vermiculite and peat moss in the same proportions, add a bit of sea weed, lime, and 13-13-13 fertilizer. Same stuff without worm castings wasn't nearly as good.

Best thing to happen to plants since earth, water, air and sun!
Never thought I would say this but I am a huge fan of earthworm poop!! Specifically this brand of earthworm poop. I have been growing veggies in containers for a few years now and only once did I venture to garden without this product. It was like my plants lost confidence in themselves and in me. I quickly corrected the sorry state of affairs with a generous top dressing of the castings and plants perked right up. Although it can get quite expensive, a little really goes a long way and the benefits far outweigh the cost in my opinion. I always added this to the planting hole while planting my seedlings but since last growing season I have also started top dressing once every 6 weeks. This is akin to a vitamin boost for my plants. This doesn't necessarily feed my plants (N value of only 1) as much as it fortifies them. My indoor and outdoor plants are more vigorous and also somewhat pest resistant (small insects-aphids, spider mites etc) when grown with the castings than without them. I love that the product does not smell bad (actually smells like wet earth which I love), is somewhat granular so that it doesn't compact in the bag and you can add little or as much of it without harming the plants. The additional benefit of organically improving the soil quality as I cultivate plants is a huge plus for me. The unused product stores well for about a year without any infestation or mold (never needed to store past a year).

Making my plants happy.
Mixing my own potting soil. This product is clean, odor free and easy to use. Mixed with coir and perlite made the nicest potting soil. The plants I have potted so far are thriving. Also spreading it in my vegetable raised beds has made the veggies happy. Does not burn the plants. Compared prices and Amazon was the best deal. This is pure worm casing, nothing else mixed in. I will be buying more.
