Incredible
Full of historical info. about Japanese culture, Yakuza, history of Japanese tattooing, fun interviews with the premier artists, all with incredible photos. Even if you don't love tattoos (i'm impartial) you would probably be amazed by just the time and dedication it takes to do this type of tattooing, which is elevated to an art.

Excellent book with stunning photos. I would have given it 5 stars if the cover had been thinker. Not sure if it falls under "hard cover".

Could be Better
I paid £57 for this book in the UK (almost $100 US)For that, I would expect a hardback masterpiece! Now I know this is paperback and I don't mind that but contents wise, it's really not that different from other Horimono books on the market. The photos are OK but I would not say stunning. The interviews with the artists always seem to ask questions about Yakuza - who cares? I'd rather hear questions about the art of tattooing; decisions about patterns, colours, motifs etc.I've so far only read 3 interviews with my favourite artists. They were mildly revealing but not much depth was covered.Still, if you are into Horimono then this book must be added to the collection.I intend to get one done one day so preparing the tattoo in my mind is of utmost importance! This book has helped with confirming which artist I prefer and it also has enough picture examples to give lots of ideas.Contact information for the tattoo artists would have been useful.

Interviews with artists whose craft extends across decades
There are of course the required gorgeous pictures of large scale tattoos. You'd expect that. if you observe the various pictures, you see familiar themes but the clients are in some cases very different. Some appear to be suit wearing gentlemen (may be Yakusa) and others thuggish youngsters (maybe Yakusa too)I loved the interviews with the artists some who are reasonably young and some who have decades long careers. The younger ones are at some level self taught but the older ones endured long and strict apprenticeships. Both groups are really committed to their craft.Interesting aspects discussed in the book are the relationship between tattoos and Japanese society on one hand (not that socially acceptable) and the individual and his tattoo. I'm pretty much in the camp that a tattoo is a personal thing not to be shared with everyone. Japanese tattoos typically have a meaning and that makes them extremely personal and private. They are also planned and executed in the long term.I wish i could find a tebori artist in the Montreal/Ottawa area.
