Solid full sound for a great price
For desktop speakers, can't beat the sound quality for the price, even at 2x. Scoped out the typical Best Buy suite of speakers at greater than $100 and these beat them hands down. Not going to shake your fillings out with the bass, but I'm listening to these in my office and frankly, I need my fillings. I'n not a gamer, just like listenable music while I work. These don't sound like they are missing a middle like a lot of the other "good" pc speakers out there. Sound can be balanced, especially with adjustable woofer. The SFX feature actually does "spread" the sound field. Perfect for what I need. And the wife, on the other side of the office, likes them as well.

Poor Manufacturing
This product was defective out of the box. The left speaker wasnt working. This is my second Altec Lansing speaker, I have to agree that they are good speakers with very good sound, as long as they work, my other system lost one speaker after 4 months. All in all there seem to be quality/manufacturing issues. My friend has the same issue, they stopped working 7 months into the purchase, and Altec Lansing would take replacements, but shipping has to borne out by yourself, this some times makes buying a new set more reasonable.I have burnt my hands twice and would advice caution, with Altec Lansing

RF interference (Speaker popping)
I've had these for years and through three different computer systems. Computer on, computer off, clicking/popping. So the RF shielding against interference of this product is extremely poor quality. I have to turn them off when I go to bed as the popping is audible regardless of volume setting even 20 feet away.my WiFi router on the far side of the room (10 ft) from them and no cell phone nearby, they still pop. It's frustrating. So buyer beware.

Misery loves company...
Well...it's nice to know I'm not the only one.I've owned these speakers for about a month. Immediately after hooking up the speakers, I too noticed a faint, but very audible "clicking" noise from the speakers. It was faint enough that it wasn't too annoying or distracting. That was until I bought a new computer desk and moved my wireless router next to the speakers. Now, the clicking noise isn't so faint anymore...in fact, you can hear it from across the room.Let's just say, "Buyer Beware!" As others have pointed out, I would be wary of purchasing these speakers if they will be anywhere in the vicinity of wireless electronics (routers, phones, etc).Other than that (glaring) problem, these speakers are outstanding! The sound quality is crisp and the bass isn't overwhelming once adjusted. The volume is very respectable with little distortion for speakers in this price range. The bass control is mounted on the sub, which is a little cumbersome. The spatial (sfx) feature is interesting, although the audible field is somewhat narrow and sounds best when you are positioned between the speakers. The speaker design is simple but attractive. The only complaint here is the smaller speakers are somewhat top-heavy and are easily knocked over.Overall, I really like the speakers but the clicking is going to drive me insane.

Very good quality for the price
These speakers have a very nice presence. I'm using them in a fairly small room, and they are just fine for playing music and games, with little distortion. The only complaint I have is that when I run a piano keyboard through the computer, they tend to crackle, even at low volumes. Then again, that's not really their purpose. For the price, these speakers do an excellent job.

15 years later...
They finally stopped working. I've moved probably a dozen times in the last fifteen years, and these speakers have been through it all with me. From my college dorm through the milestones of adulthood, this is truly the end of an era.

Terrible
Brand new item that BUZZES loudly regardless of audio input (or lack of audio). Was forced to return the item immediately.

Good sound. Terrible RF interference issues
This speaker system would get 4-5 stars for sound quality, but it has horrible problems with RF interference. There are two very common cases where you will encounter this problem...1) Locate a wireless router within 3 feet of the volume control speaker.2) Have or use a cell phone within 3 feet of the volume control speaker. In both cases, the result will be a non-stop loud clicking sound similar to a Geiger counter or handheld taser. The closer you get to the speaker, the worse it gets. In a quiet room, it's intolerable. With a strong wireless router, the problem is incessant. I did return and get a different copy, but this appears to be a design flaw as both copies exhibited the exact same performance problems. I also used two different cell phones nearby with the same result. If you're trying this speaker out in a store, try using your cell phone near it and you can then judge for yourself if the result is acceptable.
