Yes, it will work for magnetic slime. Be aware that it is messy! I recommend gloves be worn. And use strong magnets when you play with the slime.

I need to do a rust finish for my prop for cosplay. Will this work?

I think it will. I've only ever made slime with it, but by the 3rd day the slime is definitely rust colored. Not sure if that is due to the constant moisture or the chemicals in the slime that accelerate it, but the filings are fine enough that they should rust quick.
