I love Mountain house products for my camping and hiking needs
I love Mountain house products for my camping and hiking needs. They are light weight easy to cook satisfying food products. Besides updating their packaging and adding a vacuumed packed model which I love, it seems there are some flavors like this one I have not tried yet.I chose to try this because I wanted to see if there was a change in the beef products. Their eggs and chicken usually absorb water and return practically to their original state. Beef sometimes has a weird texture to me although taste is good. With this Italian style pepper steak pack, it works like they rest, boil some water, for this one its 1 3/4 cups, rip off the top of package, shake dried food around to locate the oxygen absorber pack and remove. Pour in the boiling water, the hotter the better as it fully absorbs into the food returning it to the original state. Mix it around, close the seal and let stand 8-9 minutes, I find the longer the better, I leave it shut till the package is easy to touch because then I know its at a temperature I can eat it at on top of fully absorbing the water. As for taste, this Pepper Steak is flavorful with overtones of the peppers and a small amount of heat in the spice. this is good enough to be eaten alone and you get the 13g of protein and 29g carbs. If your camping in a situation that allows for extra comforts, its fabulous on a soft shell flour tortilla, add some sharp cheddar and a can of re-fried or black beans and your really pump it up with little effort. The best part is little or no clean up with this type of cooking, if your on trail where you carry everything in and out this allows for boiling water only and keeps your pot clean as product heats and can be eaten from its own pouch.Long shelf life, use by 2027, yes that is correct 2027.I included a photo, mine is on a tortilla with sharp cheddar.

Taste Great with a Long Shelf Life
Back in aboutr 2011 I started to prep for any kind of disaster that might happen in 2012. Of course that did not happen, but it put my mind at ease just being prepared. One thing I did was pick up a bunch of canned goods, powered food of all sorts, and things like rice and beans and all that to have in case things went south. Need less to say all of that expired within the next few years.I decided to continue prepping, not like crazy, but some basics stuff one of them being food. I did some research on MRES and found they were very expensive to buy in quantity. So I started to try different brands of long term storage foods I could find on Amazon. I wanted something with at least a 20 year shelf life and that tasted half way decent and were easy to make. When I hit on the Mountain House brand I found exactly what I was looking for including the taste. My son and I have tried a few and they are all easy to make and taste pretty dang good with more than a 20 year shelf life.So now I order a pack or box of these every now and then when I am shopping on Amazon and am starting to build up a pretty decent supply without breaking the bank. I can definitely recommend these for preppers but they are equally good for camping, storing in the cabin up north or any place you might find yourself needing a quick easy to make meal.

Among the freeze-dried foods this one is quite good.
This Italian style Pepper Steak is pretty good, even for being freeze-dried camping food. On a side note, I also like that it has an expiration date in 2047. So this is also excellent for emergency preparedness. The "pepper" in this dish is yellow, green, and red bell peppers. The vegetables and meat and rice are all solid pieces, it's not like some mush or puree. The flavor is delicious. I definitely recommend this Italian Pepper Steak. One other thing, as I've noticed with all of Mountain House brand freeze-dried meals in pouches, the pouch is a good design. It holds in the heat well, it has a zip-lock closure to let the food reconstitute while trapping the steam. The bottom of the pouch has a curved pleat in the middle and the sides go all the way down, which allows the package to stand upright even while you pour in the boiling water. It sturdily stands up on its bottom. The pouch is a thick material, apparently aluminized on the inside to help contain the heat. Some of the other brands I've tried have similar pouch designs, but I'm not going to mention their names in this review for this Mountain House brand product.

Good ~
Surprisingly tasty and with good texture, MH's "Italian Style" Pepper Steak is quite edible, on a par with their lasagna. It does need a fair amount of salt (I used soy sauce), benefits from a little sugar to bring out the sweetness, and a stiff shot of hot sauce to boot. Reliable and flavorful meal in a pinch.

A no brainer.
Katrina, Sandy, Harvey, Irma. If you don't have a prep kit in your car, boat, rv, apartment, house or locker at work - you're screwing up my friend!I don't care where you live, you need a kit. Now, Wise food gets a lot of PR, but in my kit I only carry MRE's or Mountain House.MH takes a cup of hot water and about 6 minutes at most to give you a hot dinner when the power is out.Read the Wise directions; you got time for that? Knock yourself out. I dont.MH is easy, light to pack, small footprint and tastes a heck of a lot better in my opinion.I've been prepping since before Katrina and don't have the time, money or space to waste on junk. Go with Mountain House as a good supplement to canned food, dried fruit, MRE's, etc.

Seasoned just right
So after buying this i decided i needed to test the product before i take it with us camping in France for our vacation. I have to say that im not only impressed with the flavors but also like the selections of different foods from the company. Im a true southern girl from the Bayou and i was pleasantly delighted that i didnt have to add my cajun seasoning ( which my husband has banned from packing in my luggage...lol). I havent tried the breakfast ones yet but i ordered them, the company pushed back my shipment date another 2 weeks. Cutting close to my departure date so make sure u order way in advance in case this happens to you.The portion size says 2.5 but my husband can easily eat one by himself at meal time, I could only eat 2/3 of one. Also you need to let the boiling water sit for longer than 20 minutes for rice ones...mine was still kinda crunchy.
