Very Pleased
I am extremely pleased with this unit and the ease with which it installed on both my computers (one with Vista Business and a second with XP Professional). Both computers recognized the unit and I was able to burn DVD's and CD's within minutes. While I have not burned a large volume of media so far, I have had no burning failures or other problems with the unit. The Unit itself looks and feels very substantial and you don't feel as though you have to worry about the case breaking with reasonable normal use. The tray of the unit accepts both normal sized media I use and pocket CD's that my Mavica Camera takes pictures with. All in all the unit is a great performer at a good price. The software that came with the unit is exceptional as well in my opinion. It installed without a hitch and came with a variety of programs that were both easy to use and quite useful. So far I have not had the opportunity to use the Light Scribe feature so I can't really comment on that yet. I would definitely recommend this even though it is slightly more expensive than other LX models.LG Super-Multi External DVD Rewriter with SecurDisc and LightScribe GE24LU20

Good performance, needs more Mac software
This replaced an older LG burner, and has higher speeds for half the price of the older unit. It lasted for many years and burned thousands of DVDs and CDs and was more than twice as fast as the internal burner on my iMac. Unlike the older unit, this one properly burns double layer DVDs. It's a little noisy, but is quieter than the old unit even at higher speeds. Playing CDs is whisper quiet. It even burns some DVDs marked as 16X at 24X, and all have burned without incident and played back flawlessly. I have not tried it with a LightScribe disk yet.The one lack is that it has no Mac software for burning included with it, and SecurDisk seems to be a Windows-only component of Nero 11 software. I've had no problems burning on my iMac with either Toast or OS X disk burning. This unit has performed extremely well and is a solid buy.

my dissapointment and pleasure with my Amazon order
I found the LG rewriter was simple to install and from the outset worked better than the unit in my new gateway DX. I use it quite a bit, the only problem was that somehow in reading the information before ordering somehow I missed the disclaimer that Lightscribe was an option! As you can see at right, it states "Rewriter with SecureDisc and LightScribe GE24LU20". I gave away the 200 Lightscribe discs I had purchased, assuming the rewriter had included the software. As my late father always told me "That is life!"

Great drive from Amazon!
I bought this drive about a month ago to replace an internal drive that finally died. I burn a lot of clips and videos, so this drive has had quite a workout in the past month. I wanted a drive with an external power supply - I'd heard too many negatives about drives that run only on USB power, and also a Lightscribe drive because the original was Lightscribe and I have a lot of blank discs. The drive has been virtually flawless. The only issue I've had is that it sometimes doesn't recognize new blank discs, but all I've had to do is remove the disc and re-position it and then the drive sees it.All in all, this has been an exceptional drive for the price, reading and writing quickly and flawlessly. I'd definitely buy another.

Won't Burn
I purchased this burner because I wanted one that ran off AC, not off USB. USB-driven burners require on most computers that both USB cables be plugged in. I should have paid more attention to the number of reviewers who complained their "burner" would read only, not burn. So it was in my case too. When I called the 800 number on the box and worked through a long phone tree, the guy admitted that this burner doesn't work with Memorex DVDs. I don't have Memorex.I have returned it. I wish I could find one for a similar price that is reliable, but so far all of them seem to pose problems for many who purchase them. Discouraging and surprising.

CAUTION Discontinued model & Software provided for PC only
Pros:Low-cost. LightScribe enabled. Relatively fast. Ultimately I did get everything working on a iMac running OSX 10.6.8 .Cons:First it was very disappointing to received this "new" product only to find it has been discontinued.(Usually Amazon displays "discontinued" when appropriate.)I found out this model is discontinued because I had to do my own search for drivers to get LightScribe to work with a Mac. The software provided on disk is for PC's only. Ultimately I don't know if all of the software I had to piece together and this drive will continue to work if I upgrade my OSX to Lion and beyond. Being a discontinued product has me questioning how long do I have before this "brand new" DVD drive becomes obsolete. (It may already be obsolete.)Mac users be advised that although it says "Mac compatible" you are left on you own to get LightScribe working and to come up with some type of Labeling software even if your needs are very simple. You also will not be able to "write" at the full speed that this DVD drive is capable of, the one that is provided to PC users. Nothing in the description of this product let me know what I would need to do to get this all working with a MAC.This is the first time I have ordered a new product on Amazon only to find it is a discontinued model.I needed this in a hurry and I had to used the product to burn DVDs for a class that I was teaching. (So I will not return this product.)If this was not the case I would have returned this item.
