Great idea in theory, not quite there in practice
I really like mangoes but don't buy them as often as I'd like because I find them much more difficult to cut up than any other fruits I can think of. So there is certainly a demand for gadgets like this. The problem is though, that the nature of the difficulties make it quite a challenge to design an item like this which will suit all (or even most) mangoes.I was having so much difficulty slicing up mangoes that I once turned to the internet for advice. Most of the sites & videos I found recommended chopping it vertically into thirds - the theory being that the central third would contain the large stone & the other two would not. The only snag is, there's no way of telling where the ends of the stone are. Regardless, a good piece of advice I found was to leave the skin on so you can slice the flesh into chunks while still attached to the skin & then peel them off easily from the inside. Which leads us to the main problem with this device - the mango has to be peeled first. This is quite a laborious job, so using this doesn't really save any time.Nevertheless, it does help with another problem - which is that when cutting roughly where the stone is a lot of the flesh usually ends up still attached to it. Because the blades on this go around the central stone, there is generally less waste than with using a knife. However, the stones vary in size considerably so there is usually a lot of flesh left on which will need scraping off.Overall this is a helpful device which is more effective & safer than using a knife but because it requires that the mango is peeled first, it is more hassle in some ways. And it only works effectively if the mango stone just so happens to be the right size & you just so happen to get the splitter in the right place. It's a great idea, I just wish it worked better in practice. I don't know whether it would be possible to design an adjustable cutter (perhaps using wire to slice) but then presumably something like that would be more complex & therefore larger & more expensive.

Useful for people who don't want to risk the knife slipping when they're splitting a mango!
Culinare Mango SplitterMangoes are a delicious fruit, but so hit and miss to buy - I find it impossible to tell, before I'm slicing into a mango, whether it's a good one or not. My fruit and veg shop agrees there's no way to tell. If you know how, leave a comment below!I don't have a problem with splitting mangoes, but I can see where this tool would come in handy. Some people find it hard to control a knife safely (eg due to arthritis or grip problems), and some feel uncomforbable with using a sharp knife with the sideways slicing movement needed to split a mango. This tool would also be useful for children who are not yet ready to use sharp knives. It's a safety and disability aid. It can also speed things up if for any reason you have lots of mangoes to prepare in one go.The device is straightforward to use. Place the mango on its end and than press the device over the mango, pushing it down through the flesh. You'll end up with two mango halves and the stone in the middle. Because stone size varies, there will be flesh left on the mango - but you can cut that off with a small knife, or nibble away at the stone! With the two halves, score them with a knife in a cross hatch pattern, push inside out, and then you'll have a mound of mango cubes ready to pull or slice off.=== THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT ===* Sturdy construction, made of stainless steel with plastic handles* Attractive blue and white colourway* Sharp serrated cutting edges* Splits a mango efficiently with no need to go near sharp knives* Can go in the dishwasher=== NIGGLES ===* This is quite a big bit of kit, both in terms of width and height, so does take up quite a bit of room in the kitchen drawer (size approximately 13.2 x 17.2 x 4.2 cm). It's a bit of a space commitment if you're not a regular user of fresh mangoes.* There is a bit of a knack to getting mango split properly - it takes a bit of practice to get it right. I found it impossible to tell accurately where the stone would be lined up, meaning I had to have several goes each time to get the splitter in the right place, which mashed the end up a bit* Unlike a knife, there is no way to sharpen this when it becomes bluntFor sale at the time of writing this review at £4 (RRP £5.99).
