Much better than the movie.
I never had a chance to read this book but I always loved the movie. Now that I have read it, I appreciate the more detailed insight into each character. Great writing.

Quite a ride!
This book is the same age as I am.55 years after publication, with airport operations having changed dramatically, this book is still spellbinding. The background, personalities and challenges of the main characters are realistic and drive the story. This was quite a ride! I could not and would not get off the plane halfway. Great story.

Written over half a century ago is Airport still a good read?
Airport came out in 1968 when the U.S. was taking such a beating in Vietnam that President Johnson decided not to run for re-election, while the Beatles released the White Album and Hair came out on Broadway. Hailey had emigrated to Canada after fighting for England in WW II, then moved to California after the runaway success of his third novel, Hotel, where he wrote Airport. By then Hailey had a formula of taking a popular area or field and filling it with well drawn characters, adding drama and a bang-up ending. He typically spent three years on each novel, a year of research, six months organizing his notes, and 18 months actually writing the thing. Critics tended to deride his work as door stops but he sold a lot of books with Airport spending 30 weeks as number one on the New York Times best sellers list, making so much money for Hailey that he moved to the Bahamas to lower his tax bill. I personally feel the critics tended to jump him because his work paid no homage literary pretensions at all, Hailey tried to tell good stories, not impress anybody. Think of everything that could go wrong at an airport-then imagine it all happening on the same day, Airport depicts the hectic activity of an airport struggling to keep operating during a heavy snowfall following the airport's manager, a pilot and a host of those well drawn characters through myriad mishaps with that traditional bang-up ending. Likable characters and excellent pacing drew me in, but I'll be honest, during the day I read heavier stuff but after supper I want to wind down and the more innocent and relaxed era Hailey writes of combined with his craft as a story teller makes this a good choice for a pre-bed cozy. I can't put my finger on just why I find Hailey's work so satisfying, but its a guilty pleasure I cherish as I slowly work my way through his body of work.$7.99/book price divided by Amazon typical read time of 10 hours, 26 minutes=$.76/average hourly reading cost

Great read
A great read that although written decades ago still holds up well in our modern times. The version I read had a foreword that explained some of the changes since its first release which really does a lot to make the book more "sensible" considering the changes in the airline industry in the 50 odd years since it was first released.

"Airport" The Beginning of the Disaster Era
"Airport," written in 1968 was the beginning of a series of disaster books and films that just seemed to go on and on. In this case there is a bomb on a flight from fictional Lincoln International Airport and Rome. As the book begins we meet the flight crew, including the captain and pregnant girlfriend flight attendant. We also get to other people who work at the airport, the passengers, the mad bomber and his hysterical wife. My favorite character is 80 year old stowaway who provides some comic relief. Our cast is in a plane over the Atlantic when a mis guided attempt to get the bomb away from the bomber leads to an explosion and a desperate attempt to land back at Lincoln Airport to save the passengers. If the plot sounds familiar it because it was used in three other "Airport" movies and others such as "Earthquake" and the "Poseidon Adventure." They even made two satires called "Airplane" and "Airplane: The Sequel. It is a fun read.

Brilliant read
I loved reading this book a 2nd time after many years. It was a big wordy read and took place over 7 hours in a snow storm at a large airport. Hailey's knowledge of everything aviation which he turned into a thrilling story of drama and intrigue. It was interesting in how areas of security have changed. No customs, xray machines back in the 60s. It was all very laid back and treated more like a train station with trains departing.Looking forward to reading Hotel

Technically interesting but full of overcome role models
A lot of action, but contains really strange references to skin color, nationalities, sex and such.I am not sure if the author is serious about this, but anyhow its nice how men/pilots are depicted as complete idiots, cheating on their wives, while the stewardesses have to abort their babies to please the pilots.Shows that things have hopefully changed a lot through time, but kind of frightening.Who would have liked to live in such times?
