Finally happy with a candy thermometer!!
Here's an honest review for y'all. I purchased 2 candy thermometers from Amazon prior to this one. A digital spatula model that accepted heat up to 500°F which turned a dirty trailer trash brown before decided to stop working faster than a teenage weed aficionado. The other thermometer was a very basic model that looked like a giant old school human thermometer which held together for one use before rebelling and sucking up liquid through it's bottom. Yeah...it was as gross as it sounds. I admit I frequently battle the Gods of Kitchen Fires and Smoke Alarms (and am on a first name basis with the local fire department - great group of folks btw) but I was not currently at war when those two shoddy thermometers broke! If it was genuinely my fault I would have slipped those suckers right into the garbage can never to be spoken of again: they certainly wouldn't be the first Voldemortesque kitchen apparatus to silently and stealthily disappear around my house. The reason nobody speaks of said kitchen apparatuses? I will square my shoulders, level my critic with a steely gaze, ask if my outfit makes me look fat all while complaining about my current (fake) hot flash. Trust me, no one is touching that minefield!! Feel free to borrow my tactics - it's the least I can do since you read my review.Fortunately, the third time was a charm and this model is awesome!! I imagine most casual home chefs like myself would be very happy with it. The thermometer is designed so it's bottom doesn't rest on the bottom of the pot resulting in a more accurate temp reading and it's super helpful in protecting the device from melting in case you forget the stove is even on. It's also readable in Fahrenheit and Celsius so I guess I could take my show on the road to Europe if only the world was ready for my brand of excitement. Unfortunately, most people don't want to remodel their kitchen just to make homemade candied apples with me. I know...I don't totally understand it either. My favorite feature of this thermometer is it's sturdiness: a necessary survival slill in my kitchen. So far I've used this model 4 times and the score isGods of Kitchen Fires and Smoke Alarms - 0Calamity Chef - 4I'm becoming a total kitchen bada$$!!!

So Big It's Inconvenient
I use this often to make yogurt, but I'm in the market for another. It seems pretty accurate, but this thing is HUGE, so huge, it's inconvenient to use unless you are using the biggest pot in your kitchen arsenal. I use a 5 quart pot for the yogurt, and the thing is so tall, the clip is totally useless, so I have to lean it into the pot at an angle. It still hangs several inches over the side, so the top gets uncomfortably hot from the burner underneath.Yhe way it's built, that hot milk "skim" gets underneath the glass thermometer and is a royal PITA to clean out. If I were using it for candy making, it would be an even worse hassle to pry out crystallized candy. I usually end up letting it soak, and then prying and picking at it with my fingernails, for fear some will remain and contaminate the next batch. The metal edges are also unexpectedly sharp, and I'm just waiting for the inevitable moment I get cut trying to clean it.What would be really cool for a thermometer this large would be if the bottom were spoon shaped, so you could both stir and take the temp at the same time, instead of having to stir around this monster. 4 stars for accuracy, which is, of course, the point of any thermometer, but I myself would not buy one again, and am already looking for a replacement.

Keeps the right heat.
This right here is good when you fry chicken, mine I clip it to the pot and work it’s magic.

Huge help when cooking. a great product.
I have a drawer full of thermometers but I use this one most often. Checking accuracy with boiling water is spot on. The thermometer is sturdy and large enough to easily read the well marked scale. It has a broad sturdy clip on the back that clips securely onto most pots and pans, allowing it to stay in the hot liquids while cooking. I use it for deep frying, candy making (crucial) and making custards. The design has the lower glass bulb protected by a metal flange on the bottom, keeping the bulb just raised from the actual surface of the pan, avoiding false high readings as the bulb is always in the liquid. The thermometer itself is a glass tube containing a red liquid and it is well protected by the sturdy metal frame. It is easy to clean off oil, hardened candy, cooked on liquids, etc. Just a quick soak in warm soapy water and a swish and a brush with the dishcloth and its clean. I am very happy I bought this; it's everything you would want in a candy/oil/liquid thermometer for the kitchen.

Candy thermometer
First time candy maker. Takes reading next to edge, I think a bit hotter towards center of pan. Otherwise works great , I liked the clip for edge of pan
